Cleanup begins in Valencia after Spain’s worst floods in history claim over 200 lives
Cleanup operations have begun across Valencia, which has been declared a disaster zone by Spain’s prime minister after more than a year’s worth of rain in just one day caused the country’s worst floods on record. Since Tuesday, October 29, 2024, the flooding has claimed over 200 lives and left dozens missing. Three days of mourning have been declared nationwide as Valencia faces severe damage with impassable roads, destroyed bridges, and overflowing rivers submerging homes in neck-deep waters.
What’s happening with the floods in Spain?
It has been widely reported that on Tuesday, a year’s worth of rain fell in just eight hours in parts of the Valencia region, triggering catastrophic flash flooding. The torrential rains caused rivers to burst their banks, sweeping away bridges, railways, and cars and turning village streets into rivers. The Independent reported that “fresh red weather warnings for rain have prompted fears of further flooding in Spain [today].” But reports from the ground are that there has been no rain and the water has appeared from seemingly nowhere, leading people to question what’s happening.
