May 8: 3 Iyar

It was on this day that King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain issued a warning to Jews that, beginning on the following day and by the end of July, all Jews must depart their country. Even as they were issuing this edit to expel all Jews from their country, they were also sponsoring a Jewish convert to Christianity to assemble a sailing expedition to the Indies. That man was Christopher Columbus.

Columbus’ discovery and the subsequent colonization of the New world would prove to be Spain’s last hurrah. We should not be surprised at this because history teaches us time and again that, when people, nations and governments turn on God’s people, it’s not long before that particular nation or government is turned upside down. Such was the case with Spain. When exploration to the New World began, Spain was a wealthy and powerful nation, in fact, considered to be one of the world’s super powers of that time. Within a century, the Spanish Armada was defeated in a climatic naval battle with the British fleet which effectively ended Spain’s dominance in the world. With the decline of Spain’s power, came the ascent of the British Empire as the mover and shaker in the world.

Now, several hundred years after that catastrophic defeat, Spain has yet to regain any of that glory they once enjoyed. The point is, Spain is another example of what happens to a nation when they turn on God’s people: the God of Israel will turn on those nations and bring them down. Starting with Egypt, consider the present state of those nations who afflicted and oppressed Israel – many no longer exist and others are considered third world nations. The reason for this is, long before any of these nations came to power, the Creator said unto Abraham:

“I will make of you a great nation; I will bless you and make your name great; and you shall be a blessing. And I will bless them that bless you and curse him that curses you; and in you shall all the families of the earth be blessed.” (Genesis 12:2-3)

This is important to remember more than ever before. Nation after nation is lining up to come against God’s people and that includes people within America. We have witnessed in the not so distant past, how relations with Israel can go off the rails if the wrong person is in power. Furthermore, we see the animosity toward Israel grows in direct relation to the disdain people have for those of us who believe in biblical principles, which includes support for Israel and its people. We are viewed by our fellow Americans as being “intolerant,” “radical” and “dangerous.”

While those currently in power in America staunchly support Israel and defend believers in America, consider how viciously they are attacked and disparaged. In other words, hatred for God and for His purposes are raging and should the political tables be turned, that hatred may be unleashed on God’s people in unprecedented fashion. Knowing this is possible, we should be provoked to cling to our Messiah as never before. Furthermore, we should not become too attached to this world in any way because there may come a day when God says, “You must come out.” The point, today, is that we must take notice of our surroundings and not get bogged down with the trappings of our culture because when nations and governments turn against God’s people, the days of those nations are numbered.

It’s not the time for us to be downcast and discouraged but it’s the time to realize that things the prophets foretold are coming to pass in our day. It’s time to look up.
