*Cognitive dissonance is a state of conflict when a person holds two contradictory beliefs at the same time. The person then tries to overcome this conflict by trying to convincing himself and others that the conflict does not exist, or by applying some other defensive mechanism cover up or suppress the reality of the contradiction.

Anyone out there experiencing this?*

This is incorrect. As an atheist, we are made out of star dust BUT we are not worthless because we have assigned worth to ourselves and others.

If what you say is true dont you think that countries like swedeen wuld have descended into chaos?

Personally, I don’t think there is any contradiction between saying we’re insignificant compared to the rest of the universe and no matter what we do it’s not going to change anything and saying humans (and all living creatures) can feel pain and suffer (physically and mentally) and therefore their lives have value.

atheists have no infallible authority for the basis of their beliefs. they have to borrow from Christian theology.

I think any honest person experiences the process regularly. I think people see the contradiction as the problem rather than what they do with the contradiction. I’m afraid the stress that people put on themselves to resolve those things or to adhere to a settled worldview causes us to do all kinds of things that are inconsistent with the Fruits of the Spirit. We should instead be more comfortable with uncertainty in various areas of our lives where God wants to work. It helps us and, at times, those that we mean to reach with the Gospel.

What atheist ever said, “we don’t matter!”?

    A quote would suffice.

The words of who these people follow matters. It’s simple in our eyes but to them we offer nothing that exposes God as relatable. That is why the testimony of Jesus Christ matters.

I’ve experienced a lot of cognitive dissonance in my life but most of that was while I was still a christian. Since being an atheist it’s been greatly reduced!
