It isn’t – it is a sad heresy. Sacred scripture is the Word of God – but it is not what Jesus Christ left us.

There are sufficient reasons why sola scriptura is right, but one of the main reasons is that scripture has a prophetic track record. And all of its prophecies have been 100% correct. There is no one in this world that bats 1000 like scripture. What does that mean? That means that scripture is trustworthy and authoritative.

All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.

It’s strange how many people love to quotesthe verses from second Timothy to prove sola scriptura. However, the word “alone“ is not in that passage. “All“ is not the same as alone.

Because the alternative to this is to believe in Papal Authority which is entirely weaker, less biblical, more prone to corruption, and does NOT come from the mouth of God whereas the scriptures do.

If the hearts of men are deceitful and wicked, and that all have fallen short. Then why should we trust in other people’s revelations if it does not reflect what the Bible teaches?
I believe that the bible is the inspired word of God and we don’t need anything else to dictate how we should live. -
Because Jesus upheld the scriptures as trustworthy but rejected tradition, human reason and logic, and other sources of authority as fallible. These other things can shed light on properly understanding the scriptures but are not to be taken wholesale the way we are instructed to receive scripture.

I’m not one who strongly advocates for Sola Scriptura and I think most primarily give lip service to this doctrine more than actually believing it.
Tradition actually heavily influences doctrine whether it be the method of exegesis practiced or how their Church/parents/teachers/culture worship.
For example I’ve seen many debate the traditional view of Hell where the strongest argument clearly lies in tradition and not the text of scriptures, also different views on man’s anthropology, etc…
The point I’m trying to make is that many don’t really consider what scripture says as much as they trust the tradition of what they’ve been taught about the scriptures.
For myself I identify primarily in the direction of Anabaptist and therefore see Sola Scriptura different than many. For example I believe Christ and his teachings, as recorded in the Gospels, are the absolute athority and any teaching whether from scripture or clergy must needs be considered in light of His teaching.
So my level of athority/filter works more or less in these tiers..

#3 Other scriptures

First, I think we need to be sure we understand what sola scriptura is. It is not a statement that scripture is the only authority for faith, morals and doctrine but rather that scripture is the ultimate authority. There may be other sources of authority, e.g tradition and church teaching, but they are subordinate to and must be consistent with and not conflict with scripture. The alternative is that doctrine is subject to the vagaries of men and we are liable to steer off course. The best evidence of the apostles doctrine is scripture. The second best is the writings of the early church fathers of the 2nd century, and so on. Sola scriptura does not itself need to be found in scripture, but rather it is a principle to ensure that we faithfully maintain the Apostles doctrine. Where churches have not adhered to this there is a tendency to veer off with doctrines like the cults of the Virgin Mary and the Saints which is certainly not the Apostles doctrine. Such a concept is completely foreign to the Old Testament and the New Testament and to the writings of the early church fathers. It is in conflict with the role of Christ as our only mediator as taught in scripture. It may even be in conflict with the scriptural injunction not to seek to communicate with the dead. It resembles the polytheism of Hinduism where there is God but many lesser gods. A god for this and a god for that. Yes, I am aware of the technical distinctions between latria, hyperdulia and dulia where only latria belongs to God, while hyperdulia belongs to Mary the Mother of Jesus and dulia belongs to the Saints. But in practice the lines get blurred and they hinder your relationship with God through his unique Son Jesus Christ as you become too focused on extra intermediaries. For example, far more Catholic Churches are named after Mary than after our Lord Jesus Christ. You cannot maintain a relationship with someone if typically you communicate with them through mediators. Indeed, it seems like an implied statement that you don’t have a relationship with them since you need others to speak to them for you.

The problem of duel authority (tradition and scripture) is that man adds things that are wrong! Jesus said the Pharisees did that and corrupted things. We see that in church history (hence need for the reformation).

Biblical historical practice and canonicity – preserving the words of God were a consistent practice throughout Biblical history and the methods to preserve them since the canon closed have been coherent, consistent, and reliable.

It doesn’t say “rapture” in scripture neither but many believe it tho right. Sola Scriptura = Scripture Alone. We do not lean on our own understanding but trust in the word of God. Does it have to say “sola scriptura” exactly for it to be true? Or u rather rely on ur own “feelings” as well…which the bible say the heart is wicked and deceitful.

Because it’s one of the foundational characteristic of Being of God and He doesn’t change. Sola Scriptura = scripture alone. We can’t base anything which isn’t steadfast. God’s word is steadfast , inerrant. It’s the reason.

Without it nothing is ultimate, the Bible is the highest wisdom, the highest moral, the eternal truth . Only God’s word is the ultimate, everything else’s temporary, untrue, not by Holy Spirit inspiration, limited knowledge. Well there’s much more about that .

Because at least six times the Bible says you can’t ADD to God’s word that’s recorded in the Bible. So, Sola scriptura is Biblical.

What are the alternatives?

We would first need to look for an infallible declaration in each book of the Bible that identifies itself as scripture. People say fulfilled prophecies but that works if the Bible is a single text. It is not. It is a library. “Bible” is related in etymology to library in Spanish, Portugues, Russian and others. So what next? We would need to look at a document that infallibly says what the infallible books are. So the table of contents? Ok. But who wrote the table of contents? Were they infallible men? One would say “Sure, the apostles who write it”. The problem is that it was centuries after Christ before there was any declarative decision from any Christian fellowship on what the infallible Sacred Scripture was. So that Church would have to be infallible on what scripture is and thus what are the repercussions for the OP of sola scripture? It is simply that they had beliefs and they chose the books of the Bible that fit their beliefs as they interpreted those books to do. So those men in 382, 393 and 397 were not apostles but were bound together in fellowship and a shared perspective on the essentials of what the Sacred Scriptures mean. This is key. The scripture does not mean what it says but it means what it means in the sense of the right hermeneutics. So how do we know that they were correct on the books they chose? This is where Tradition comes in with apostolic and magisterium succession. Hands were laid on them by bishops for ordination which could be traced back to the apostles. So we have Scripture, Tradition and an anointed Magisterium. No Magisterium? Then who really needs the Bible?
