How do you distinguish between biblical art and graven images?

A graven image would be something made to depict what we think or imagine God to look like.

Appreciation vs worship or superstition.
An image of Christ on the cross for example should invoke feeling of compassion and self sacrifice. You should not expect or let it “represent” powers or abilities of Christ.

Depends on what you do with it.

So if I painted a picture out of awe and reverence to imagine the glory of God and His presence, that is okay. But if I worshipped the paining instead of God, that makes the painting a graven image?

This is a graven image if you worshipping it or a vehicle to bring your daily needs.

A graven image is made to worship like an extension of the holy presence of the invisible God. Of course this is wrong! But art in and of itself is God given, and the creative nature of symbolic imagery is connecting spiritual contemplation with artistic expression. And God created such beauty.
