Are there any extra-biblical reasons to believe a devastating flood occurred as Moses described in the Old Testament?

Give me a break. Why do some Christians insist on taking these stories literally? God didn’t create the world in seven 24 hour days. Adam and Eve didn’t speak with a serpent because they didn’t exist and the universe isn’t six thousand years old.

How about looking at the “evidence” in a different light. How about instead of thinking ancient Near East creation stories support the biblical account, instead, think how those stories illustrate the Bible is not unique or inspired in a special manner. Instead of corroboration, maybe, just maybe, they demonstrate a common thread from which the Bible story was taken and adapted to a Hebrew context.
