Why are there only 66 books in the Bible, why didn’t they add the other book books in the canon?

They tackle different matter than Jesus Christ, God and God’s work. Like book of Enoch which is about fallen angels and other else.

Forgive me, I’m old and wrote this from memory I may miss some detail but the gist is right.
The Old Testament (39) [OT] books was pretty much set by what the Jews used as their the Greek translation of their “Bible” (Septuagint/ LXX) at the time of Christ, I believe (and I could be wrong) the OT has more “books” than the LXX because there are things LIKE 1 & 2 Chronicles were 1 book but spread over 2 scrolls but the source text is the same.The New Testament (27) [NT] are all 1st century by apostles of approved by apostles , universally used across the church, an exception is Hebrews, we don’t know the author, but was generally accepted by the early church and the apostles.
Then there are the deuterocanonical(DT) or apocryphal(AP) books, if my maths are right:
7 in the Roman Catholic church
10 Eastern OrthodoxThese churches call them DT, which means below canon so authoritative but not at the same level as the 66.
Protestants see them as of dubious origin.
Jews were split over their authenticity.
For me, a Protestant, believe they should still be printed in Protestant Bibles in a marked off section as they provide interesting history and a background to what happened between Malachi and Matthew.

I was told that the Apocrypha is not inspired by the Holy Spirit and also irrelevant to the Holy Bible.

Because they are clearly not cannon, it doesn’t take a special gift of discernment or a council of authority to put it together, in fact the cannon was already well established way before it was made official.

Adding other books to canon was honestly not part of the discussion by the time the vulgate was put together in the early 380s. The books recognized as scripture were already in common use, fathers had already debated the merits – we know this from more than ample letters and essays. In my opinion which is not shared by orthodoxy I think all ancient books have value including books not on the OT like Enoch, Jasher, jubilees, and some of the 1st and 2nd century epistles that made their way into church history. I don’t see them as scripture, just history that can fill in some gaps.

Because the other books are erroneous and not accepted by the society or jewish council at that time of cannonization.

The apocrypha was in the King James bible until the 17th century. They are still good for historical reference and background information. They are not authoritative scripture inspired by the Holy Spirit.
Jesus is who we listen to for instruction. He testifies to Himself. For He is the Word made flesh.
Now He said to them, “These are My words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things which are written about Me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled.”

They can be treated as site references. But not infallible

The reason why 66 books are in the Bible is because the rest are not inspired by God. If you look at other “lost books” they fail textual criticism, accuracy, and an array of other scrutiny, and contain much error.

R.C. Sproul speaks on Canonicity but I can’t find it on youtube. Something I ordered from renewing your mind (Ligonier Ministries) I felt gives quite a complete picture on the history of it.

They did. The first list to ever contain all 66 books *also* contained the 7 deuterocanonical books. 73 books since 382AD. Check it out yourself.

The canon that has 66 books is a pretty late one. The Catholic canon has 73 books(if i remember correctly), while the Orthodox one has 77. Both are older than the Protestant canon.

I would agree that the Catholic Church did add to scripture. It’s called the New Testament.

Doctrine alignment, consistency, contradiction, and very low percent of deception possibly. The majority of what’s not in the Canon today is for good reason, bad scrilture is usually contrived, doesn’t fit the time frame for accepted texts ect.

A quick read of the apocrypha, will answer your question. The old testament apocrypha was never ever excepted by Jews as scripture. And newtestament apocrypha was clearly rejected already in the first century. The were not written by people inspired by the Holy Spirit.

Because the Holy Spirit has chronicled exactly what He desires you have so that you can know God the Father personally, love Him intimately and live with Him eternally. Trust Him!

The 66 were/are more focused on Christ instead of highlighting praying to the dead, plus others – taking out the importance of Christ by elevating self!

The book of jasher, along with the ark of the covenant were taken to Ethiopia. I forgot yhe name of the church, however the book of jasher had been quoted in the bible at least twice. I vrkieve 3 supposed books of jasher have surfaced through the ages. Only one of which has an obvious correlation and reciprocated relationship with the bible.

I’m as ill equipped with the knowledge as to why it was omitted other than the possibility of the church having been infected or infiltrated for ay least a millennia and some odd centuries before our time. What I can tell you though, is that I have seen first hand what I was pulled out of. I was never one to “kiss and tell” but I will admit that have kissed death on the lips and I was pulled from it many times over. I encourage yout to find your own truth, your relationship with Christ will differ from mine, and from others.

There were no more God inspired books, that’s why the True Church only hadd 66 books in it.

The 66 book were focused on christ. Secondly, the old testament was in the era of God the Father then there was over 400 year of divine silence. God never spoke this period only men who interfaced with Angels (this was when the extra books were written). Their encounters were not a pointer to the coming of Christ. The New Testament was the Era of the God the Son. And we all know that the God head in our dispensation. Thanks

Jude talks about the book of Enoch..
Now, is the book of Jude wrong or the book of Enoch?
Always had this question on my mind. Someone please shed some light on this question.

I ask and wonder all the time as well. But someone told me that if i question why , then maybe i will also question what is written in the Bible. And that God was the original author, the all inspiring.

It was hard enough finding books that more or less agreed with one another, so the ones that could not be reconciled were not included.

Because Catholics follow men just as much ad they follow Christ and sometimes more. That’s why ONLY they believe those.

Do your home work and find out… that’s how you learn. Stuff like this is no longer taught in Seminary Schools. Well at least the bad ones or if liberals teach it, they don’t believe the Bible is the word of the LORD. Look up people like FF Bruce and Norman Geisler and read. Good stuff. Do your homework!

When the canon was compiled, everyone knew what the books of the Bible were. They were put into a list precisely because they saw a new trend coming that other books were being smuggled in as it were. These extra books are some of those. The 66 books is the real list.
