Can someone explain to me why Roman Catholics have a Crucifix (Jesus on the cross) while most other Christian churches have only a cross? Thank you

I’m no expert lol, but I heard once that its because some Catholicism doesn’t believe in the resurrection? That he died on the cross for our sins but didn’t raise from the dead? Its just something I heard, I’m not saying for sure that is why ?

The early church prior to east west schism allowed images and icons. I suspect because of culture in the west, sculptures became the norm as art… so thus the crucifix was created. It was during the protestant reformation where reformers like calvin and zwingli rejected this practice. And when evangelicals became a thing, it was further disputed. But lutherans and anglicans still practice this in some form or fashion. Except the more evangelical versions of these denominations.

I asked a Roman Catholic why they wear the crucifix and they said because it reminds them of what Christ went through on the cross. I may disagree with their symbolism, but that was their explanation. Protestants wear just a cross because the Lord is no longer on the cross, but He is seated at the right hand of the Father.

I can’t speak for the Catholic Church but Protestant chinches (as far as I know) have an empty cross because Christ has risen.

Because most Protestant church’s have a long(several hundred years in fact) prohibition against images and statues. The reason being it is a violation of 2nd commandment against graven images.

I wear an empty tomb because he is risen. Instead of a cross.

Because Catholics are masters at ‘getting’ their adherents to feel guilt. An image of the crucified Christ evokes infinitely more guilt than an image of an empty cross, which is more accurate as Jesus ascended bodily into heaven.
But I’m certain if you bought a few indulgences, you will feel less guilty….
Frankly I don’t even know why or how the catholic church hasn’t disbanded by now. If it weren’t for the galaxy sized indifference of its adherents to their “faith plus works = salvation” doctrine, by now it should have been disbanded…

Catholicism is about maintaining power in the church. It wasn’t always about that , but it became about that.
Confession takes God’s place as mediator so you need the father priest, the church gives rosaries which come from the church, the church creates works based sacraments and says salvation is dependent on the church, you need confirmation as a child, they sold indulgences to buy your way out of Hell, they excommunicated anyone who disagreed with papal orders, sometimes, torturing or killing them, and they put a giant graven image of Christ front and center to make you feel like you need to be in the building, to bow before the false idol, to get the holy water, to confess to the human being no better than you, to make you so sure you need them, they’ll never lose power.God said bow to NO graven image, and statues of Christ are graven images. Every mass they break a commandment. God is not in the statue. We should not ever bow to it.

I am Lutheran and I think it is quite legitimate to have a crucifix. The work for our salvation was completed by the work of Jesus on the cross.

The purpose of the crucifix has always been to display the immense love Christ has for all humanity and to remind us of the hope of the Resurrection won by that victory of Jesus’ Passion.

Protestants emphasise the idea of the empty cross as a symbol of His resurrection.
But both Catholics and Protestants believe in the forgiveness of sins through Jesus Christ, and in the resurrection of Jesus Christ. The main difference between Catholics and Protestants is about the justification process.

Since the cross is the cross of the zodiac and a pagan symbol my opinion is that the devil mocks God by parading the image of his crucified son on his own symbol. BTW Christ’s sacrifice was a one time only sacrifice and not an endless fountain of blood. At his death, it was seen the lance produce blood and water signifying that Jesus was dead, his blood all ran out .

Catholics are not big into the risen christ. For some reason they want to keep him on the cross. I think that way they can say his work is not finished..

How about Protestants love to take away anything catholic in their faith. Protestants has no love for their mother church.
They can’t stomach the fact that Catholics have proof of the body, blood and face of Jesus. Their king.

Because theologically, Catholics believe more than Protestants in the value of venerating images and symbols. Protestants generally disagree with this practice and believe that venerating images is, to a greater or lesser degree, idolatry.

As a reformed church member I’ve noticed that in some cases the cross is finding its way into some church buildings. But that’s it. I think you’ll find it also in the Orthodox church

In my Church there is no cross or cricifix of Christ or anything else. If they have the Crucifix of Christ and worship then they are worshippers of an Idol.

We just believe that since Jesus rose from the dead, He’s no longer on the cross. It doesn’t bother me if others have a crucifix though. My sister and many of my family members on my dad’s side are catholic. My sister even gave me a rosary that I have hanging on my rear view mirror. I don’t pray to it or anything. It’s just pretty and if anything, a reminder of what Jesus did for me.

If you research transubstansiation you will get a better concept of how Catholics view atonement and why it falls short of what Christ has done. Remember he said, “it is finished”. He died once for all. But the way the Catholics do things they are constantly crucifying Jesus over and over again to their own eternal shame.

The Cross is the symbol of crucifixion to the world. Jesus said Follow Me and take up your cross. Jesus is not to be on the cross but we are!

Catholics must constantly sacrifice Jesus on the Cross via the Mass since His work wasn’t enough to save them, therefore, he is perpetually on the cross. Whereas Christianity believes Jesus when He said, “It is finished” so we don’t have Him on the cross, because He is risen.

I think in part it is because in the Eucharist we partake of him in the Eucharist and in the mass we quote the scripture from Paul about proclaiming his death until he comes again.
