Dear all,
Many people wrestle with the question; Where do Dead people go?

Do they go straight to heaven if they are saved?,
Do they go straight to hell if they are lost?
Do they just sleep in the grave no matter their condition whether saved or not?

    I love your question, Marvin
    .
    To begin with:
    There’s nothing like purgatory.
    .
In the Hebrew Scriptures, ‘Sheol’ is known as the “realm of the dead”, or a place where a departed spirit/soul go to. But then, in the New Testament, the Greek translation for the word Sheol is ‘Hades’: which literally means the same thing.
    .
Now, Hades (or Sheol) is divided into two sections: Paradise, and hellfire. And in-between these two places is a chasm (or, great gulf).
    .
According to 2 Cor. 12:3-5 & Rev. 2:7, Paradise is a synonym of Heaven: also, relationally, according to the story of Lazarus and the Rich man, we also know that “Abraham’s bosom” is a synonym of Heaven.
    .
Now, when a man dies, according to the believe in the OT (which is applicable to the NT), he goes to the realm of the dead (Sheol).
    .
For the sinner (unbeliever), he goes to a place called ‘Gehenna’, meaning, ‘Hell’, a Greek word derived from the Hebrew word, ‘Hinnom.’
    .
Notice that the Rich man in hellfire NEVER asked for his brothers to pray for his speedy release from some purgatorial ‘middle ground’, which will grant him entry into heaven. But why? It is
b/c the place he found himself in is an eternal place.
    .
Now, ‘gehenna’, or hell, if you may call it, is a temporary place like, ‘paradise.’ These two places are temporal: a sinner goes to hell, while a saint goes to heaven. They go to these places awaiting the final judgement:
    .
According to Rev. 19:20; 20:10, 14-15, the final hell is known as ‘the lake of fire’: now, after the final judgement, Satan, rebels — all them who are unrepentant, both angelic and human, will be cast away into the lake of fire; which burns with sulfur and brimstone: then, will sin and death be destroyed.
    .
At this juncture, the present heaven and earth will pass away, according to Rev. 21. . . relationally, according to Rev. 22, Eden will be restored.
    .
I hope this little piece of exposition serves as an enlightenment to you. [Amen!]. God bless you, Marvin.

I believe “SHEOL” referring to the general place where the dead went both righteous and unrighteous.

  3. Emezie Michael Uchenna says:

The abode of the dead to me is still a mystery. Just like Thomas, who argued that he will not believe until he Pierced his hands on the Lord’s feet,.., there is no general conclusion on that subject yet, the mystery and nature of the dead is not fully revealed. Based on our Africa experiences and testimonies about the dead, there are some that are dead&buried but are still living among men in the different location far from his/her original domine… You see, this testimony counters the idea of after life comes judgement n the final home granted for either the righteous or unrighteous ones…
What am propounding is, there’s deep mysteries beyond our human intellect. And Am not say is not attainable but for now,we are yet see he that has pierced his Hand through that gate(death)..

  4. Marvin Marvin Marvin says:

In Luke 16, which by the way is not a parable. We see a clear picture of what happened to the wicked and the faithful.

  5. Nedson K. Banda says:

Those who die in Christ, their bodies still united to Christ do peacefully rest in their graves waiting for the resurrection day. But their souls do immediately pass into glory waiting for reunion of their body and soul on the judgement day.
    I Thessalonians 4 : 14
    Isaiah 57:2
    I Corinthians 15:43.

  6. David Holmes says:

no u wrestle with it.. yes.. yes.. no –> one goes straight to their destination.. any Qs?

  7. Stacy Turbeville says:

    Immediately to Heaven (Hebrews 9:8)

  8. Herb Van Schoick says:

one theory…time as we know it ends…we go straight to the ressurection of all believers and we meet the Lord in the air….

  9. David Stacks says:

You go to paradise or to a place of torment. Depending on how you lived.Jesus told the thief on the cross, today you will be with me in paradise.

  10. Gerald Garner says:

    Hebrews 9:27
27 And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:

  11. Jered Oluoch says:

The soul goes for judgment first then placed in either paradise or the place where there’s fear n gnashing of teeth.. then comes resssurection the soul united with body then both body and soul are given their eternal life or eternal d
    Death.

  12. Mark Celio says:

To be absent from the body is present with the LORD.

  13. Ben Incoll says:

Saved people – Their spirit goes to paradise and body is in the grave
Unsaved people – Their spirit goes to sheol and body is in the grave
Body remains in the grave while their spirits are in either place until the Lord’s return then all reunited with a glorified body for believers or eternal hell for unbelievers

  14. Jeremy Paul says:

Christ said to the thief on the cross today you will be with me in paradise….Paul said he would rather be absent from the body and present with the lord. Technically we don’t know for sure, but I’d say once you die here you will instantly be there if you’re a believer and have excepted the free gift of eternal life.

  15. Micki Shilvock says:

No wrestling, the spirits of the righteous go to heaven. The spirits of the lost go to hades/Gehenna.

  16. Harvey Darell Barete Dalman says:

God’s people goes to Paradise(Abrahams Bosom) while Dead People will be buried in the Graves, here is the Proof –

Luke 16:22 King James Version (KJV)
    22 And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham’s bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried;

No one Goes to Heaven – Except Jesus Christ says here

John 3:13 King James Version (KJV)
13 And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven.

Do they go straight to hell if they are lost? No, Jesus Christ already victorious over Death and Hell? Has no longer power –

    Victory ->
1 Corinthians 15:55-57 King James Version (KJV)
55 O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?
56 The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law.
57 But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.

    Hell(Second Death) ->

Revelation 20:6 King James Version (KJV)
6 Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years.

So it means ALL HIS PEOPLE – will never Perish and no one can pluck them out of HIS HAND –

John 6:37 King James Version (KJV)
37 All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out.

John 10:27-28 King James Version (KJV)
27 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me:
28 And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.

  17. Samuel Johnson says:

Well you don’t have to worry about that question if you repent and place your faith in Jesus Christ of the Bible as the only one who can save you.
