When He said this, He was saying that we need to die to our own desires, and follow His ways.

Read some 3-5 verses above that verse. Get the context and try to understand what ‘your’ cross that Jesus meant, and the decide if you can carry it and follow Him!

No it’s a choice

He can put you under tribulation to get your attention but he won’t force you.

Every body has a cross to carry this is not a problem free world for anyone but Jesus makes it lighter to carry. You either decide to follow Him or not Your choice!

23 And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.

Sometimes a cross is literal. How about the man who was called to help Jesus carry his cross. How about the man on the right side of Jesus, who died on his cross next to Jesus. How about Peter, who was crucified upside down. Crosses are sometimes literal but even those that are not have suffering with them and so the suffering is literal. Jesus said for us to take up our cross daily and follow him. Jesus suffered on His cross and we suffer on our crosses daily in imitation of Jesus.

I believe that Jesus was indicating that in order to truly follow Him, it is necessary to put self aside and the Master first in our heart. Now, there will be hardships (crosses) to pass through.

Everyone has free will. He will not make us do this. When Jesus said, “Take up your cross and follow Me” in Matthew 16:24; Mark 8:34; Luke 9:23, He said it as a path to following Him. And Jesus didn’t mean a physical cross. Nor did He mean some burden they must carry in their lives, like an abusive relationship, a thankless job or a physical illness.
When Jesus carried His cross to be crucified, no one was thinking of the cross as symbolic of a burden to carry. To a person in the first-century, the cross meant one thing and one thing only: excruciating death.Therefore, “Take up your cross and follow Me” means being willing to even die in order to follow Jesus. Not only a physical death for faith, as is more common in other countries, but more often in the U. S., this is a “dying to self.” It’s a call to absolute surrender. Jesus said, “Whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for Me will save it. What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, and yet lose or forfeit his own soul?” (Luke 9:24-25). Although the call of Jesus may be tough, the reward is matchless.
