One of those old Jewish legends Paul warns us off. It pops up every obce ibmn a while in.western literature these days. The author of the Shack wrote a book titles Eve in which Lilth i involved. There is another older one read last year from England with the Title Lilith.

Yes- its Jewish mythology referenced in Talmud and midrash commentary. There is no reference to Lilith in Torah except for an obscure reference in the profits… I think Isaiah) but some rabbis saw a discrepancy between the creation accounts of Genesis 1 and Genesis 2. That developed the interpretation that Adam was created with a wife in Genesis 1 who was his equal. Something happens to her and Yahweh had to create a second time, which is what we read about in Genesis 2.
The whole Theory’s rubbish of course and I do not buy into it. But basically, as The Story Goes, Lilith was too independent to be submissive to Adam. She was sexually dominant and refused to Be his helper but instead insisted on being his equal. Thus, in popular culture, Lilith has become a symbol of feminism and secularism. Some of you may remember that back in the 1990s, there was a musical tour a various women artists they ran for many years that was called Lilith Fair.

This thought arises later in history with the Babylonian Talmud, and is a matter of Jewish folklore more than anything else.If I remember my Hebrew class correctly, it is a essentially a ghost story of a demon who takes the form of a beautiful woman who comes at night for children. It was based on a single passage in Isaiah. The Hebrew Word here is לִילִית (transliterated as Liyliyth), which arises from the Hebrew root word of לַיִל, which means night. It is more commonly understood to be a night bird that haunts desolated places and can be seen and understood to be a night demon.

Please, everyone. The first mention we have of Lilith comes from the Babylonian Gilgamesh saga (Gilgamesh and the Huluppu-Tree). Innana, the goddess of sex and war, wants to turn the Huluppu-Tree into her throne and her bed. But she is thwarted. The bird monster, Anzu, built a nest in the top branches, a dragon monster nested at the tree’s base, and Lilith set up shop in the midst of the tree. Poor, poor Innana was deprived of prime real estate. But Gilgamesh helps Inanna by getting rid of all three of the demonic beings, thus freeing up the tree for her. He didn’t kill Lilith but simply chased her into the desert, and from there she entered Hebrew mysticism as the demon who precipitates stillbirths and takes newborns from their mothers.
The Old Testament makes only one possible reference to Lilith (Isaiah 34). But that is not much to go on. The meaning of the reference is not certain. Some scholars believe that the reference is to a kind of owl; others believe that the reference is a metaphor referring to threatening creatures of the night. Lilith, as a mythological night demon, would fit this role, personifying darkness and evil. Psalm 91 does something similar when the psalmist poetically describes threats as if they have the personal intention to commit harm:
“You will not fear the terror of night,
nor the arrow that flies by day,
nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness,
nor the plague that destroys at midday.”In any event, Scripture offers no support to the idea that Lilith was Adam’s first wife. That’s imaginative nonsense from the 9th or 10th century. I have a suspicion that this would not be an issue had Lilith not become a feminist hero. In the mythical Hebrew account, she fled Adam’s domination. In fact, it is claimed that she refused to take the bottom sexual position. She rebelled against both Adam and God. The story is mythological nonsense.
If Adam and God are symbols of the patriarchy, which many feminists affirm, then Lilith is the first warrior against patriarchal oppression. That’s why Lilith receives praise from some contemporary feminists. In Jewish mythology, however, her rebellion turned her into a demon who takes the lives of children in the night. She also becomes a succubus in order to give birth to more demons. Now, from the standpoint of her story as Adam’s first wife, I do understand why some feminists might view her favorably. But this is nothing but a distortion of the biblical literature. Moreover, Lilith’s trajectory is not terribly heroic. As a winged demon of the night, she oppressed in mythology both men and women. Consequently, it is ironic that feminists would find her attractive. Aside from a metaphor for evil, there is no reason to take her seriously in the Judeo-Christian tradition.

In Genesis 2 we have the truth. After naming all the animals God created Adam’s first and only wife out of Adam’s side.Adam then called her “woman” because she was taken from his side. Latter, after the fall Adam called his wife’s name Eve because she was the mother of all living. There is no Lilith or need of Lilith in the bible. Myths like this are created in hell to distract people from the bible.
