I just got an email for one of the pastors at my Church. Only 51 percent of Americans believe in God ( may have ticked up lately). But 56 percent believe in satan. 29 years ago nearly 71 percent believed in God in 1991

Theologians and philosophers can help us better understand God’s word thus acquiring more comfort from the text. I don’t see the problem.

I can dig it, it’s why I say “God says” and then quote scripture rather than “McArthur says”

Perhaps it is better to state what the role is of each. This should not be an either/or choice. We believe the Bible to be the word of God, but scholars and pastors can expound on the Word which is why we go to learn from their exegesis of that word. We thank a God for the role of the Bible AND for pastors and scholars.

The God of the Bible is a personal Being in contrast with the gods of many other religions and philosophies who are abstract or impersonal forces. Man can not know God exhaustively. One cannot know God exhaustively unless one is God. But God has clearly communicated about Himself to us through the creation and through human’s being made in the image of God. On top of this general revelation, God communicates about Himself to particular people (theologians, Pastors, ministers and the people of God) in special revelation, which includes the events of nature and history, human words that are inspired by God and recorded for us in Scripture, and through the Person of Jesus Christ, who is the ultimate image of God.

Amen, theology is the study and or belief of God. Everyone is a theologian in 1 degree or another. Atheists dont believe theres a God. Their theology is wrong but that’s their understanding of God. We just have to be careful and use scripture to back up what or peoples beliefs are before we agree with it

As human being we have limitation and not perfect. but God’s Word is the only perfect and accurate ? percent.

Is it the Quran?
Is it the Book of Mormon?

The opinions of theologians and philosophers is like chaining yourself to the Queen Mary’s anchor and then attempting to swim.

Sure glad to see everyone here speaks fluent Aramaic Hebrew and Koine Greek, and can read God’s word as intended by the authors who wrote them. It’s also amazing that everyone has knowledge of the cultural idioms and axioms of the Biblical timelines as to put phrases into proper context of the day. And no need for Early Church Fathers either, who would have been the 1st Bishops appointed by the Apostles, many of whom saw the risen Christ. Nope! No need for schollars or theologians trying to bridge the 2000 year gap and help our understanding.

Theology is made up of two Greek words,Theos which means GOD and Logia,which means word or discourse.So not taking comfort in it you mean that you don’t take it in the discourse or word of God.

If by “God’s word” you mean the scriptural tradition, that was written by theologians.

Not often you see someone who uses the work of those qualified in their field claiming to take comfort in it rather than the scriptures. Your 1 statement seems to have a few logical fallacies going on.

Nevertheless, God has appointed and granted the spiritual gift of teaching to people who wear those labels you mentioned. God says they are important and tools in His hands. Are you denying He works through the people He has called she empowered to shed light on the truths of scripture? If you think you can discern all the truth of your own ability, why then does God appoint these gifted teachers???

You rely upon theologians who expertly translate the Hebrew and Greek; you’ve rely upon the church fathers as far as identifying which books and letters were written by apostles/apostolic associates.
You rely on the same fathers when it comes to turning away fraudulent forgeries!
If you read a dynamic translation like the NLT, you’re relying on how a theologian understands a phrase is understood in the culture.
It’s unwise to demonize the greats who have gone before us.

Clarkent S. Zeñaby. I have seen you ask a few where they get their comfort. Well, as a 1st year Biblical Schollar Student, I must say that I get my comfort from the Word of God. I am so grateful that I am a part of a larger group now, working to understand God’s Word more deeply and fully. I also am amazed by the ones who came before me that studied the ancient languages, and risked persecution (many died) to be true to the Word of God and pass it down in languages we can understand today, instead of it being lost to the sands of time. I get my comfort from the Word of God, but I am also in awe of God’s Church, which is made up of Clergy, Schollars, Theologians, Philosophers, and Lay-people….all for his Glory!

Agreed. Scripture first and should always be priority. But its also good to read other theologians so we can grow in knowledge also. Because sometimes they have a way of going about things we haven’t thought about.

Yes but many can share their stories and knowledge about God’s word. We comfort each other in other words.
