Birth of the Church of God (Christian Union)

The Church of God was born on August 19, 1886, at a mill along Barney Creek in Monroe County, Tennessee. Richard Green Spurling preached and invited hearers to sit together as the Church of God. His father, Richard Spurling, set the congregation in order as Christian Union.
