Would you consider this a fair statement? Older Church of God preachers often speak with a bitter tongue because they have believed to much, took too many passages of scripture literally when it was meant for other people in another time and expected too much from the denomination even though it was struggling?
The resultant disillusion has occurred so often that they have developed a bitter and cruel mockery of spirit.
I think of one dear brother that I met 12 years ago and saw him every week for 7 years, he was still getting a small stipend from the COG but said he couldn’t have made it except he met a woman after his first wife died and she had property and insurance money. Over the years I have met several like this, it leaves them unhappy and they cannot fit easily into a local church.

I had hurts in terms of being lied to several occasions by state overseers but was more hurt by seeing friends used and abused by the system. I was not raised COG so it was not hard for me to leave back in 1985 when told that I was not needed or wanted by the COG. Leaving was the best thing for me in terms of personal and spiritual growth.

Some use that excuse as a crutch. I say get off your pity party, man up, get busy for the kingdom.

Unfortunately I think this is more common than not. As we get older, we begin to realize things are not as cut and dried as previously believed, wondering where did my life go and is this all I have to show for it. I feel for them it’s sad.

Often it has to do with not being able to pay the price of admission. Many of us come from very poor backgrounds and that limits one economically and socially as well. It means our world view is different. Unless one has a passion to learn and to adapt a changing denomination will leave them behind. Note how country music has changed over the years; nowadays a star will have many paid advisors, some studying sounds others lyrics and still others being advance men and working out ticket prices etc.. Being a country star is perhaps 20 times more complicated today than it was 60 years ago. The advisors and helpers now out number the musicians.
