She Gave Her Word

for the faith for the gospel

_Philippians 1:27

I can think of no greater tragedy than to live one’s life for something that was meaningless in the end.

I ran across a cute little poem that illustrates this well. It slips the knife of application in with a smile and you’re pierced to the heart and don’t even know it.

It’s called: Melinda Mae, by Shel Silverstein

Have you heard of tiny Melinda Mae,
Who ate a monstrous whale?
She thought she could,
She said she would,
So she started in right at the tail.
And everyone said, “You’re much too small,”
But that didn’t bother Melinda at all,
She took little bites and she chewed very slow,
Just like a little girl should…
…and eighty-nine years later she ate that whale
Because she said she would!!!

Did you get the message?

To her credit, Melinda Mae was a determined little girl who gave her word and kept it!

But the great tragedy is that 89 years later, she had spent her life doing something that that kept her alive but was entirely meaningless.

The ONE THING for today: We all live our lives for something. Choose wisely, you only have one life to live. Or in the words of from the line of another poem:

Some men die by shrapnel,

Some go down in flames.

Most men perish inch by inch,

Playing little games.
