“Personal discipline requires the willpower to do what is necessary to accomplish what is important.”

My dear amazing VPs,
When I was a boy, we’d play pick-up games of baseball, basketball, and football. This was serious business. And it included a draft. Usually the two most talented players would be the captains and they’d take turns choosing their team from the rest of the group.
The rest would push and shove and wave their hands shouting, “Pick me!” “Choose me!”
There was no better feeling that being a first or second round draft choice. But the noise level got much more somber as the captains worked their way down to the last few stragglers.
Being the last players picked…that was a dark day.
I don’t know if kids still play pick-up games like we did in those days, but if you live long enough you’ll experience rejection. Its a painful and embarrassing thing to not get picked, and worst yet to get “sympathy-picked.”
I know people who live their entire lives trying to get picked.
In their actions and compromises, they are always crying: “Pick me!” “Include me!” “Like me!”
Its sad to witness.
My dear grands, there’s a better way.
The ONE THING for today: Live your life in such a way that you can say, “Follow me.”
Everyone won’t.
Matter of of fact, most will be so self-consumed and focused on the latest and greatest that they will run right past you to grasp for latest ever-changing “cool” thing. (Or is it the latest “hot” thing?)
Oh well, you know what I mean.
But here’s the deal, if you devote yourself to things that really matter; things so big and important that you can’t do it alone, there will be other people who will want to join you, and that’s the sort of people you want to be on the same team with.
Be kind about it, but ignore the rest of the crowd.
You’ve got meaningful things to do and exciting places to go.
