“It is not just that we live in a world that has banished the gods but not the devils. We live in a world that has made gods of the devils.”
— Contextual Intelligence by Len Sweet, Michael Beck
It seems I hear something about A.I. (artificial intelligence) almost every day.
The word “artificial” is the key word. What that means is that it not a part of the original design. It means it was created by humans. This is not new to us.
The list of artificial things is long…
- Artificial nails
- Artificial sweeteners
- Artificial plants
- Lab-grown meat and plant-based alternatives (technically these are not artificial but they are sure hard to swallow.)
Things created by humans are not necessarily bad but we do need to be aware that the more we surround ourselves with the artificial the more we run the risk of being separated from the real (the original).
It can become an issue.
For example, a high percentage of Americans are vitamin-D deficient. Why? Because they spend most of their lives in an artificial controlled climate/artificial lighting environment and seldom get outdoors in the real world of sunshine.
More importantly, living in an artificial world affects us at deeper levels. It is not an accident that the majority of atheist live in cities. There’s no wonder, they are cut off from the original – city lights, concrete, elevators, office buildings and subways – they all insulate and isolate city dwellers from the real creation.
And here’s the rub: the more you are separated from the creation the more the danger is that you will be separated from the Creator.
A few days ago I toured a museum that housed Thomas Edison’s workshop. Think about how that one man changed the world: the incandescent light bulb, the phonograph for recording and playing sound, the motion picture camera and its viewer to name a few. What wonders!
All that to say, I really appreciate the great advances and progress of mankind. Our lives are potentially a whole lot better as a result.
I hope and pray that we will be able to say the same about artificial intelligence.
Only time will tell.
But this I know, the more we keep the original creation in our lives the greater the chance we kept the Creator in our lives and the more the Creator is involved in our lives the better people we all will be and the better we will be able to manage the things God created and the things He creates through us.
The ONE THING for today: Frequently do things that allows the sun your face, the wind in your hair, and a little dirt under your fingernails. And take time to look to the heavens and count the stars.
“The heavens declare the glory of God, and the firmament shows his handiwork.”
Psalm 19:1
