Finally, in Jewish history, we look back to October 11th, 1138, when a massive earthquake struck Aleppo, Syria. This city holds deep historical significance for the Jewish community, with traditions tracing its origins back to King David’s time. Aleppo’s Great Synagogue, dating back to the fifth century, was a pivotal site, especially for safeguarding the Aleppo Codex. This Codex is renowned as the earliest known manuscript containing the entire text of the Bible, famously consulted by Maimonides for setting rules on writing Torah scrolls. Copied over a thousand years ago by Shlomo Ben-Buya’a, its deposit with the Aleppo community underscored the city’s profound historical importance.
