Good evening, and welcome to #ourCOG Daily Brief for April 26, 2026.

Today’s top stories include a dramatic incident at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, where a gunman charged toward the ballroom, leading to his arrest. This comes as the Southern Poverty Law Center faces scrutiny regarding the ethics of its undercover operatives within extremist groups. On the academic front, Harvard University is experiencing a strike by over 4,000 graduate students demanding better wages and protections. Meanwhile, the Trump administration has reclassified state-licensed medical marijuana as a less-dangerous drug, though public opinion on the drug’s societal effects remains mixed. Internationally, the U.S. and Iran continue their complex relationship surrounding a potential nuclear deal, with historical context provided on the Obama-era JCPOA. Peace talks aimed at resolving the Iran conflict have seen some back-and-forth, with U.S. envoys eventually heading to Pakistan for indirect negotiations, despite earlier reports of cancellations, as the Strait of Hormuz remains a point of contention affecting the global economy. Adding to global challenges, many in India’s middle class are finding that affordability, particularly housing, is not what it used to be.

From our prophecy news desk, updates include the identification of Cole Tomas Allen, 31, as the suspected shooter at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. In other news, lawmakers are questioning Representative Ilhan Omar’s role in a fraud scandal, with a CPA asserting that her sudden increase in wealth would be hard to overlook. Furthermore, a House panel has ordered the Southern Poverty Law Center to hand over communications with the Biden-Harris Department of Justice and the FBI, and President Trump has reportedly ordered the U.S. military to “shoot and kill” Iranian small boats in the Strait of Hormuz.

And finally, looking back at Jewish history, on April 27th in 399 BCE, Socrates carried out his death sentence by drinking hemlock. For centuries, Jews would debate his legacy, with some studying his philosophy to find harmony with Judaism, while others sought to ban such studies, viewing Greek thought as inimical. Later, in 711, Moslem general Tarik, with assistance from both Jews and rebel Prince Witiza, launched an attack on southern Spain from Gibraltar. After conquering cities like Cordova and Granada, Jewish communities were often entrusted with safeguarding these newly acquired territories under Moslem rule.
