And finally, in Jewish history for May 3rd, we look back to several pivotal moments. Traditionally, this date marks the fall of the walls of Jericho in 1282 BCE. Later, in 443 BCE, Nehemiah dedicated the newly built walls around Jerusalem. Fast forward to 996, and the papacy of Gregory V began, making him a contemporary of notable Jewish scholars like Hananel Ben Hushiel. A darker chapter unfolded in 1096 when, during the First Crusade, Emico, the Count of Leiningen, attacked the synagogue at Speyers. This event marked a tragic turning point, as what had been sporadic atrocities against Jews in Europe became organized and frequent, leading to the beginning of widespread Jewish martyrdom.
