I came across this statement directed toward parents of LU students. This seems to be a departure from the “biblical mandate” of prior years of evangelism and to a new social consciousness espoused by liberal idealism. Am I wrong about this?

Service-learning allows Lee University students to follow a biblical mandate to serve others and their local community. Building on the foundational lessons he or she has learned at home, your son or daughter will experience firsthand the deeply rewarding, far-reaching benefits of serving others.

I had suggested back in the mid 1970s that we change the college name to Lee University of Southern Tennessee or L.U.S.T.!

Charles, there seems to be a clear answer to your question and it revolves around the use of definite and indefinite articles. No, you are not wrong in the most basic sense based on what you presented. It seems “the” biblical mandate that you took from your tenure at Lee many moons ago was solely evangelical in nature. Here at Lee, we recognize several biblical mandates — hence the use of the indefinite “a” in the quote you provided — and one of these is serving others. Where I would call you wrong is in your attribution as to motivation. I would attribute this so the social consciousness as introduced by Christ throughout his ministry, as opposed to any secular school of thought.
