DON’T WALLOW, GET UP AND FOLLOW – Ray E Horton

I read a post about struggling with “besetting sins.” First, we must remember that Jesus dealt with our sins and we received His forgiveness. The battle is now in the mind, where the devil condemns us.

Yes, we want to overcome, but we must remember we are no longer sinners once we are born Again. The problem is with old patterns and habits that have yet to fall off as we renew our minds to the truth of God’s Word, that He is in our new spirits, and who we have become in Christ.

Just repent and move on

If we slip up, we don’t wallow in remorse, but simply acknowledge it a sin, turn back (repentance), and thank God for His forgiveness and the overcoming that is in progress.

Our spirits were made anew and made perfect when we accepted Jesus as our Lord and Savior, but then there is the lifetime of working out that salvation in our daily lives. Let us not be discouraged when we fall, but rejoice in the victory as we gradually overcome, as scripture says from glory to glory.

Change the subject when tempted

The best way to overcome these old, sinful patterns when they crop up is to focus on Jesus and not the sin. You become more like what you focus on. When my flesh wants to sin, I change the subject by praising the Lord and thinking on all the good things of my life in Christ.

Finally, brothers, whatever things are true, whatever things are honest, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue, and if there is any praise, think on these things” (Phil. 4:8).
