If human beings have sinned (which they have), and if they are responsible for their sins (which they are), then they are guilty before God. Guilt is the logical deduction from the premises of sin and responsibility. We have done wrong, by our own fault, and are therefore liable to bear the just penalty of our wrongdoing.

Guilt

Now there’s an unhappy word.

But sin (which we all commit) and guilt (the result of our sin) and the Cross (the solution to our guilt) all go together…

Or could.

But so many choose another way to deal with guilt.

The Apostle John summed it up this way: “This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil.” (John 3:19)

They’re like the lifelong culinary over-indulger whose way of dealing with the excess weight is to never look in a mirror, ignore the scales, and keep buying larger pants.

But their heart knows and eventually, all the denial in the world will not absolve them from the consequences.

The ONE THING for today: Perhaps the reason Jesus was crucified on a rocky peak called Golgotha was so that it would be harder to put our heads in the sand about sin, guilt, and the judgement to come.
