“It is what it is” Does Not Have to be Forever

“We shouldn’t make the mistake of moving automatically from “is” to “ought.””

— When God Goes to Starbucks: A Guide to Everyday Apologetics by Paul Copan

Copan nailed me this morning.

Why didn’t I think of this?

We’ve all done is…look at a situation and sagely shake our head and say, “It is what it is.” (Like that is suppose to help matters.)

Paul Copan’s quote reminds us that “It is what it is” is a descriptive term, not a moral term.  Just because something is the way it is doesn’t mean that it should be that way.  That’s where human agency fits in.  That’s where you and I fit in.

It’s our job to strive for what ought to be.

The ONE THING for today: Is is what it is because nothing changes because no one changes. You be the one to change that.

Jesus said to him, “Rise, take up your bed and walk.”

(John 5:8)
