It’s camp meeting season and while most denominations have summer gatherings the Church of God meetings are unique. The expectations are different and the preaching is geared up to meet those expectations. Most of the speakers are seasoned preachers and rise to the occasion. I am in no way criticizing these long held traditions but only ask; what else might be said in these time slots? Back in the eighties I was on a small team that helped certain professionals learn to speak in public. There was a judge, several lawyers, two dentists and a doctor or two plus people from the business world.
Most of these people had served in their profession very quietly until they were elected to an office within their group and was asked to speak publicly and to the media. In addition to technique we asked; what does your organization want you to say as their spokesperson? What challenges is your profession going through and how will you solve the problems? Are you trying to create understanding or empathy? Do you have a goal or vision that you want the general public to be aware of?
As I listen to camp meeting speakers I would like to hear what they are up against at the executive level. Are there any plans to reach out and produce growth? I want to hear if they are aware of what the average layperson is going through on a daily basis. Are there any thought processes going on that will enrich our lives at the lower levels?
