Look For These People

11 And I raised up some of your sons for prophets,
and some of your young men for Nazirites.
Is it not indeed so, O people of Israel?”
declares the Lord.

12 “But you made the Nazirites drink wine,
    and commanded the prophets,
    saying, ‘You shall not prophesy.’

―Amos 2:11-12 (ESV)

My dear V.P.G.,

Look for people who fan the flames of God’s call on your life.

And be alert!

There will be people who encourage you to “succeed” at everything but God’s call on your life.

One of the things I appreciate so much about my own parents (your great grandparents) is how they instilled in me a sense of calling. They were careful to not call me themselves, but my earliest memories of my parents include them assuring me that God had created me for a very special purpose and it was my responsibility to discover that purpose, surrender to it, and follow that call for the rest of my life.

And dear grands, that explains who I am and what I do this very day.

And I expect the same from you.

However, looking back, there were always those people who tried to get me sidetracked. They dampened the call of God on my life and offered others options. Some of them were good options, even worthy options, but they were not what God had called me to do.

There will be people like that in your life as well. Watch for them and resist them. For in the end, “winning” is being faithful to God’s call, all else is just distractions.

The ONE THING for today: God brought you into this world for a reason. Discover it, follow it, and surround yourself with people who support it.
