Is it Okay to Drink?

Ten years ago one wouldn’t think twice about bringing a beverage into church.  The sanctuary was respected and revered.  But now, it is hard to find a person that doesn’t bring a drink into church with them.  So, is this Biblical?  Don’t know.  Is this okay?  Probably.  Is this socially acceptable?  It is become more and more so. But before answering if it’s really okay to drink in church, let’s make a simple connection between drinking in church and fasting.

We are lead to fast, so we get closer to Christ. Right? We forgo earthly substances of food and drink so our physical desires are second to our spiritual desires and heavenly connection.  We focus more on Christ when we focus less on what we are going to eat and drink, where we are going to eat and then on how we are going to loose weight because we ate and drank.  That caramel macchiato banana and raspberry smoothie infused with Mexican vanilla and hazelnuts sprinkled with a touch of Indonesian cinnamon just blew our calorie intake for the month.

When we are in the church house, in a holy place should we not allow ourselves to forgo the caffeinated coffee, the flavored water or the hot tea that tantalizes our taste buds?  Now, some argue that the caffeine is need to keep them more alert, the flavors are required to keep them entertained and the warmth is a must for their health.  Yes, absolutely.  But for the only few hours out of our week in which we are in a place of worship, maybe we should let it be more about worship and less about us.  Perhaps the true experience with the Holy Spirit will be better than drinking in church.

The Bible said examine your selves before you partake of the Lords supper. For this cause this is the reason many sleep. He talking about dead. Lord help this not happen to any of my family. Or anyone else. I want my family and my self to reverence God in everything they do. What would you want them to do. Now I don’t know who wrote this. So I’m not trying to offend anyone. But if the gospel offends. It means you are a little to f

  2. Unless it’s in a fellowship hall or a place provided for such Occasion. Then that shouldn’t go on while Church if going on. But whether you know it or not people. I love you. So does Jesus. There’s one word I put where I said I can’t this morning. I meant to say I came this morning to eat and drink
Sorry about me hitting wrong letters.

  3. There are a lot of things we do in church that aren’t taught in scripture. But the Bible indicates that we are to partake of the Lord’s Supper in Church. That involves drinking.

As far as weather we should have cups of coffee, bottles of water sitting around, etc., that is a practical matter of taking care of people’s physical needs and keeping the place you meet clean.

    1. Louise Cummings God’s house? The church building is not God’s house. The earth is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof, so all our houses are His house, but a church building should not be considered His temple. That’s terrible theology. We are His house. We are his building. If you are calling your church building God’s house, how is that different from having ‘high places’ in the Old Testament.

    2. Sure we are the Church. The Tabernacles God lives in if we are Christians. But in the Old Testament. God had a Temple built. In the New Testament He had a house. For He said Upon This Rock I’ll Build My Church. And the gates of Hell shall not prevail against. They worshiped in houses while Jesus was here. But where He was see if you could find anything but reverence going on. His Disciples when they went from place to place worshipping. Is in places they didn’t have a Synagogue The would go to houses until. They they got Churches built. Paul and the Disciples built Churches everywhere. They had seven Churches of Asia. And Jesus found something wrong with with everyone except one. That the one we are to pattern our life after. That’s the One He’ll take in the Catching Away when He Comes To Get His Bride. The other churches were probably the ones who though they could get by with. Some probably had their high places like you compared the Church to. I would have you examine to see if I’m in the right church. Since you believe you can do just about anything. That Temple you are living in. The house. What ever you want to call it. But the fleshly part will go back to dust. But that inward man will stand before God one. His Judgment will be honest and Just. That’s Theo one you better know you have reverence for. Because the Inward Man is The Breath Of God that God breathed into Man. And Man became a living soul. It will live on forever somewhere. That’s the one you need to examine daily.

    3. There is no evidence of anyone in the New Testament every meeting in a special purpose church building. They met in ‘homes.’ The word translated ‘church’ refers to an assembly. James talked about saints meeting in a ‘synagogue’ which could have referred either to the assembly or the building. But he mentioned a footstool in that passage, James 2, which sounds more like household furniture.

    4. We believe in the Lords Supper and practice it. You should be in some of our Communion services. It will sure make you remember what He went through. He said in Remembrance Of Him , until He Comes. The greatest Communion services I have ever been in the way we do it sometimes. Of course on Sunday when big crowds are there. We just pass it from row to row. Sometimes o Wednesday night when smaller crowds. We put tables across the front of the Church. Linen tablecloths on the tables. Everyone who wants to be a part of it. We will sit around the tables. The Lords Supper is sitting before every at the table. Of course the Scriptures are read Concerning The Lords Supper. And we take as long as we want to examining ourself. Ant our minds on what Jesus and the Body And Blood of Jesus. We stay at the table as long as we want. Then when we feel we have confessed our sins or short comings. And remembering The Precious Blood and Body of Jesus. The One And Only One Who Had Never Sinned. But I had sinned. But I have had them under The Blood Of Jesus , Many years. But a Spotless Lamb. Died for me. Where I wouldn’t be separated from again. Unless I walked away. Because Jesus said I Will Never Leave You or Forsake you. Then we take The Lords Supper. And when as a table gets finished it just one person finishes first. Another tabes that place until we are all finished. You talking about a Blessing. We are blessed. The Bible said for us to draw nigh to Him. And He would Draw nigh to us. I guess the it boils down to how much of God do you want.

    5. Link Hudson if they didn’t ever go to churches. I wonder why Paul was always writing letters to the Church at Corinth. The Galatians Church, The Church at Ephesians Church,The Church at Colossians , the Church at Thessaloniki ,why Paul, James And Jude , preached and wrote letters to these Church. The Main ones Why did The Lord tell The Apostle to warn all the Seven Churches at Asia. , that if they didn’t change. The Candlestick would be removed. The Candlestick never went out be night or by day. The Light comes from Jesus. Jesus is The Light Of The World. Or did you even know the name of all these books was real places. There was churches in all these places. The one in Asia. All Seven of them. The Lord told John to write to. He was on the Ill of Patmos Jesus caught him up and God showed him things that would come to pass. And The Lord Lord John to write to all these Churches.

    6. Louise Cummings ‘Church’ is how most English translations translate ‘ekklesia’, which refers to an assembly. It isn’t talking about a church building. Gaius hosted the church in Corinth, because Paul wrote, Gaius mine host and of the whole church….’

Nympha had a church oi his house. That doesn’t mean a steeple-house inside a march larger house. It means a congregation that met in the house.

    7. Louise Cummings You can look scriptures up online, can’t you. Colossians 4:5 mentions the church in the house of Nympha. She didn’t have a steeple-house in her living room did she? Read the end of Romans for the reference to ‘Gaius mine hose.’

Here is another reference from Philemon.

1 Paul, a prisoner of Jesus Christ, and Timothy our brother, unto Philemon our dearly beloved, and fellowlabourer,

2 And to our beloved Apphia, and Archippus our fellowsoldier, and to the church in thy house:

‘Church’ refers to the congregation that met, not to a church building.

Haven’t you ever heard a sermon where the preacher explained that the church is the people?

  7. Y’all asking the wrong questions. The early church met mostly in living rooms. One of the main things they did was primarily break bread and drink. They shared the gospel in the process. The idea of a “sanctuary” would have been the thing foreign to them, not the fact of eating and drinking during church.

  9. Link Hudson. No way you can prove it had alcohol in it. Because in the Old Testament. Grape Juice at times called wine. One time the Grapes still hanging on the vine was called wine. You don’t get drunk while it’s on the vine. To be alcoholic. Had to go through a process.

    1. Sure, look at I Corinthians 11. When some folks drank too much of it, they got drunk. So it had to have alcohol in it.

Also, unfermented grape juice was not considered kosher for Passover by the scribes and Pharisees who required that the yeast died and be sloughed off the top before it was considered kosher. Jesus told His listeners that the scribes and Phairsees sat in Moses seat; ‘whatsoever they bid ye observe, that observe and do. But do not ye after their works….’ So any Jewish believer who partook of the cup during Passover at least, would have had to have drunk ‘real wine’ if He was going to do what the scribes and Pharisees said about such things.

The prohibition against beer and wine was invented after John Wesley’s time. It isn’t in the Bible. Wesley preached against the use of distilled liquor, not beer and wine. That evolved into preaching against all alcohol. It’s from religious tradition, not the Bible.

    2. What about the Scripture. Touch not, taste not , handle not that which was to perish with The using. You Know the Pharisees and Jesus never went along with them. They had some teachings that God gave. Probably thousands they made themselves. What about Be not drunk with wine wherein is excess. But be Filled with atheist Spirit. The wine in the New Testament represented The Spirit anyway.

    3. Louise Cummings Aren’t you the one whose view is more along the lines of the ‘Touch not, handle not’ teaching Paul was against?

Paul said be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess. Why would he say that if he believed drinking wine was a sin? Why condemn the excess if moderation were forbidden?

    4. Louise Cummings not to what? Get drunk? I’m not saying to get drunk. The fact that Paul taught against the excess of wine is evidence that the use of wine, not in excess is allowed. The Old Testament told people who lived far from the place the LORD would choose to buy wine or strong drink if they desired for one of the tithes. Drinking wine was specifically allowed in the Old Testament. The New Testament doesn’t forbid it, either.

    5. Paul was actually condemning the worldly philosophy of touch not, taste not, handle not. He said it had the appearance of wisdom, but wasn’t actually the safeguard it claimed to be.

  11. Many in the CoG prefer their Old Testament religion. Which is ironic being many claim to be Spirit filled. As a spirit filled person, the original question of this post disturbs my spirit ten times over. It smells like a question you would ask of Moses, not Jesus.
