Writing of home: “the place where, when you go there, they have to take you in…something you don’t have to deserve.”
_Robert Frost
Okay, let’s get the truth out front and center: You are surrounded by incredibly flawed people. You’re not crazy. Many of them are self-centered, self-focused, and some just plain selfish.
Sometimes they’re jerks, sometimes they’re unexpectedly kind and gentle.
Sometimes they’re saints and sometimes they’re sinners.
Most times, like you, they’re simply trying to get through life.
So what to do?
Put the gavel down.
People can’t be on trial all the time.
Friendship and marriage is especially about putting the gavel down.
It’s no accident or incidental thing that the words “for better or worse” are inserted into the wedding vows. At any given moment things could get better but they could also get worse. That’s life. Go with it.
The ONE THING for today: It’s amazing how much better things can get when you stop expecting people to live up to your standards. (Let’s be honest, standards that even you can’t always meet.)
“Despite what many therapists will tell you, you don’t have to resolve your major marital conflicts for your marriage to thrive.”
