Sonja gets the last word…

The following is a devotional that my wife, Sonja, sent to her ”Homebuilders” Sunday School class.  Several weeks ago I started including her devotional in my weekly devotions that are included in the bulletin each week.  I thought I’d include this week’s entry in my blog.  It will be well worth your time to read it…

Sonja, my lovely wife and yes...a true "Homebuilder"

When Lee was five or six years old, a new family began attending our church that had a child with mental and emotional difficulties.  It was very obvious to everyone except the mother of the child.   One day I was talking to my husband about the situation.  I thought we were alone, but Lee “radar ears” Kemp must have been within a mile of the conversation and heard it, because the next time we saw this lady, he promptly told her that I said something was wrong with her child and she didn’t want to believe it.  (I was praying for the ground to open up and swallow me at that point!)  Unfortanatly the mother took great offense to my remarks and she and her family stopped attending our church.

Maybe King Solomon had a child with “radar ears”.  I don’t know; but in Proverbs 21:23 he says:  “If you keep your mouth
shut, you will stay out of trouble.”  Oh, how true!

How many times have I gotten on the other side of a conversation and wished I hadn’t said “so and so!”  I have a feeling I’m not alone in that wish.  We all say things from time to time that we regret.  We say things in the heat of anger that we can’t take back…we pass on a morsel of gossip that we heard from someone about someone from someone else…we forward e-mails without taking the time to check out their authenticity…the list could go on and on.  When it comes to words that wound,
we definitely need the Holy Spirit to take control of our tongues and keep us out of trouble.  If we will ask for His help, His “ears” will perk up and help us keep our mouths shut!
