The microcosm of the liberalism that the Church of God…
The microcosm of the liberalism that the Church of God entered was the Gospel Harvester Tabernacle in Atlanta, Georgia. It was a church of compassion and inter-racial harmony. Both Earl Paulk, Jr. and Don Paulk were sons of an outstanding Church of God pioneer, Earl Paulk, Sr.
This church evolved from COG deep roots separating in the 50s/60s. There was a conversation that took place as a result of a visiting COG minister in the Paulk family home. The father and the visiting minister got into a discussion about sanctification; one taking the position of instant, definite work of grace and the other a progressive work of sanctifying grace.
The brothers in their conversation could not recall what position their father, Earl Paulk, Sr. held only that it was a deep discussion of two great COG ministers. Both dismissed both men as legalistic. They had definitely departed their father’s faith. They were laying the foundation for a new belief system far from what they had been taught by their parents.
This is indicative of the liberalism that was entering the COG and Atlanta, Georgia was a hotbed of what was to become progressively into a new Church of God.
