Did we grow up? Is change inevitable? For me, DEATH was years down the road unless Jesus would return. Now I KNOW if the Lord tarries, at most by nature, I have 5-6 yrs left. (of course that could be 5 minutes I know that.)
My point, the last sermon before I left NC for FL, our pastor listed in his sermon, his favorite movies. Once I heard a pastor mention a good movie but you had to ignore the language. In my youth a COG kid got a spanking (some got a whipping) for going to a /cowboy movie. A woman would go to Hell if she cut her hair. A COG lady could not make heaven if she wore pants. And God forbid if makeup or jewelry was used. Today you might not believe that was the COG, but it was. WE had a list of the worst sins. For many years even TV would send you to hell. Now, I look at my wife, she cuts her hair short, wears a little makeup and jewelry and even wears pants to church. I KNOW HER life there are very few more Christian people than she. My HONEST concern, I am now approaching the END. Was my church that wrong? Was Wade Horton and other pioneer's crazy? My dad was a pioneer COG preacher in the 1920s-1950s. Formal education of 3rd grade. He was forced to quit school and become a full time farm hand at 9 yrs old. (Not unusual, many kids at 9 were working in the cotton mills)
He was NOT a 'hold the line' pastor in his sermons. They were more of Love and dedication. He and mama towed the line themselves. Her hair was never cut and dad did not even wear tie clips nor cuff links. I never heard him mention it. If ladies could not wear jewelry he would not either, was how I saw it. I never heard ONE BAD word about church members, they were his family. Now I am asking myself, In ten years will our church accept members living together without marriage. Are we going to allow pastors to perform the gay marriage? Will we accept some social drinking (I think that one is a given as we do now accept it in some areas and other countries. If you think those last ? are far-out, let me say in 1951 the COG would have 'Turned someone out' for wearing a wedding ring. If a pastor had worn a ring he would have lost his license. How far have we changed, How far will we change?
