Yes, contradictions do matter. Eg if there are contradiction in the gospels then we have to treat them as unreliable testimony. Even the authors themselves understood that principle. See this in Mark 14…
55 The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for evidence against Jesus so that they could put him to death, but they did not find any. 56 Many testified falsely against him, but their statements did not agree.

Unreliable testimony is not the only verdict open to us. For starters we need to decide whether the disputed section is foundational or not. Additionally, are we looking at a scribe’s copying error? Or accurate reporting of a genuine confusion? Scripture was recorded by fallible people, surely capable of occasional mistakes – all of which increases, rather than detracting from, the Bible’s authenticity.

I hear this all the time, how I approach it is I ask the atheist to cite one example and explain why they feel it is a contradiction. I’d always try to keep this subject as a discussion. I often find that a lot of sceptics (particularly online ones) haven’t actually read up on these and have picked them up from YouTube videos, blogs, memes, etc. However, you will find people who have thought them through.
I’d also add, that if they use the scattergun approach, ask them to select one to discuss. If they won’t do that, then you select one for them. If you find they don’t want to engage then it’s OK to dust off your feet and move on, you’ve tried to discuss a contradiction with them and they don’t want to discuss it, so they’re reasons for discussions are probably not genuine if they do not engage.

Typically this is based on either an ignorant view or willful ignorance about scripture. If you start asking for specific examples, you’ll usually find that they have a very limited view of scripture.

If you want to see contradictions you will find them. If you trust the Holy Spirit to guide you then they will not be contradictions. Many people have pointed out contradictions to me over the years (especially Liberal Christians). At first I would get nervous with what they told me. Then after reading the Bible for myself none of them ever seemed to really be contradictions at all.

Another question that I often ask is why did the early followers put these books together if they had so many contradictions. We have Iraneus a follower of John who basically had the NT put together as it is today. If you were choosing a book to support your religion would you put one together with so many contradictions??? Those who lived closer to the time of Jesus were either too dumb to see the contradictions and we are soooo much smarter 2000 years later or they did not see these contradictions as contradictions. ??♂️??♂️??♂️

I would say, show me. Most “contradictions” are simply verses taken out of context. Even Christians are guilty of this, you can make almost any individual verse say what you want it to. Numbered chapters and verses were never in the original documents, they were all added. It would be like writing someone a ten page letter, than having a total stranger pick out one sentence, and try to use that to describe the entire letter. It can’t be done. Every book in the Bible has to be taken as a whole, not a just a group of random sentences. When read that way, they don’t contradict, they amplify each other. The other types of “contradictions” are Paul said this, but James said that. Those you need some Biblical knowledge to explain who they were talking to, and what was going on in that particular congregation at that particular time

Of course there are. Heck, there are two different creation narratives in the couple chapters of the whole book.
It’s a collection of 66 books with many different authors.Put 35 of us in a room, ask us to prayerfully answer one question about God – how many answers do you think we’ll get when each of us prayed and asked God to give us the answer?
God inspired the authors but there are issues of context, language, history not to mention eons of time distance between us and their initial words. Of course there are contradictions!But the question is, is our faith big enough to see through these things that the God of the Universe is over all, in all, and through all? Can we trust that the cohesive story of God throughout Scripture is more powerful than contradictions?
Why do we fear? The faith is strong, and our God is stronger.

Apparent “contradictions” are routinely resolved with a more thorough familiarity with the Word of God. The doctrines and events and quotations of Scripture do not present themselves as if they were part of a Divine File Cabinet. Other critical ingredients are found in other Gospel Accounts, in other epistles, and often even in the other Testament! To fully understand any single idea, every other contributing facet of that idea must be included. To not do so gives rise to the false accusations of “contradiction!”

All of scripture is true. One passage complements and adds to the other. We must accept this and incorporate all of scriptures truths into are correct understanding. The scripture itself states that it does not contain everything. Scripture further refers to the church as the pillar and Foundation of Truth 1 Timothy 3:15 . We must remember that for the first 350 years after Christ death is there was no scripture ? Only many and a growing number of loose manuscripts which needed to be compiled .. but what church was given the authority to do that? It is good to read the early history of the church has written down by those first practitioners of the way who lived between the year 100 and 350. They are known as the early church fathers and their accounts are genuine.

Alleged contradictions in the bible don’t exist. There are not two creation accounts just two different angles. One disciple remembers two angels at the tomb, another remembers one. They didn’t visit the tomb at the same time so their both right. No man has seen God completely in his glorified form or you’d be incinerated, human for of course-there’s 88 appearances of God in a tolerable human form in the OT. Moses saw the backside of God and developed a radiant face that people couldn’t directly look at. Close encounters of the God Kind should be a bible documentary.

The Bible is a large book and takes a lifetime to study and comprehend. Proper hermeneutics skills and honest interpretations within this framework is possible. But nobody ever become an expert on everything to do with scripture- to large a task
What Atheists sometimes do is play instant experts and misinterpreted what they quoted in scripture. Set up straw man arguments using Old Testament laws against modern standards without consideration of context.
These contradictions are more atheists misunderstanding of scripture than substantive proof of what they are really claiming (it’s a human document only and unreliable).

Ask them to show you where hut you will need to be able to accurately give proper context. These conversations usually are like I use to be, ask then questions they can’t answer adequately and then bash them for not knowing. Choose your battles and know the what, where, why, who, enough for the battles we walk into. It is not like everyone one of us knows all the answers to every question. We are all students.

The bible was written by human beings who were inspired by God. Their personalities and interpretive understandings remained their own yet within the context of God’s Sovereignty . As such it is understandable that there would be perceived contradictions in the bible which when looked at in its larger context is in fact no contradictions at all.

But, let’s consider passages from the Bible that contradict external standards with verifiable reality.
(1). The Bible states there is a solid-domed firmament in the sky over a flat earth keeping back the heavenly waters from flooding the earth.
(2). The Bible names four rivers that have a single source, but geography shows those rivers do not have a single source.
(3). The Bible says Pi is 3.0, not 3.14.
(4). The Bible says stars can fall from the sky.
(5). The Bible says genetics can be determined by magic sticks.

Additionally, the Bible can’t get math right. In Matthew, we learn that there were three sets of fourteen generations in Jesus’ genealogy which should add up to 42 generations. However, there are only 41 names with one set only having thirteen names.
Overall, there are at least ten other problems with math in the Old Testament not forgetting the geometry problem with Pi from 1 Kings 7:23 above.

Then work out the seeming contradictions. If you are unable yourself to work it out, the issue has likely been addressed by others and you can refer to their solutions. We have to understand what the bible is and what the word of God is. I’m going to take one of the most commonly known biblical contradictions as an example. The four gospels have differing account of how many women or angels there were at the tomb of Jesus. They all say different things about the number. In truth, the number doesn’t matter. What we’re supposed to know is that there were people and angels there, even more so that Jesus was resurrected at all. The Bible is just a book, it is no more than pages and text, but the word of God is the message that we get from reading the text. The text will almost never be 100% perfect, but the message is. The same goes for its scientific and historical inaccuracies. The numbers in the bible, when added up, account to about 6000 years. Sadly, because of this, many Christians believe that the world is only 6000 years old. What most don’t know are that the numbers are meant to be symbolic rather than literal. This is a very foreign concept to western culture, but think exaggerating, saying 1,000,000 years to represent a long time. The bible is not supposed to teach science, nor 100% accurate history down to the number, but instead lessons of theology, the commandments of God and the Gospel – the word of God. Yes, there are contradictions, but the Bible is inspired. Not every little word is from God, but its messages are inspired by him. We’re not to believe that the Earth is flat or that the world is 6000 years old, but we are to believe that Jesus Christ is our lord and savior and that he died for our sins. All scripture is God breathed, but so is humanity, and we aren’t perfect either.

Don’t waste your time with them. In my experience they invest 12 seconds in their argument. They went to google and looked up “errors in the bible”. Then they copied and pasted someone else’s list which THEY DIDN’T VERIFY, and sent that list to you, and they want you to invest several hours of your time to dissect it.
I tell them. “Take the process you used to find those errors, and use the exact same process to find solutions for yourself. Go online and google “solutions to errors in the Bible”.”
End of story.
If they won’t even bother to invest their own time in finding answers, then you shouldn’t invest your time either.

That said, don’t waste time or your spiritual energies defending the Bible against a mocker, scoffer, or reviler.
They will never be satisfied with enough proofs are evidences, and they simply move the goalposts, their only goal is to mock, revile, and attempt to wear you down… It is literally a waste of time to engage in that particular activity with that particular type of people.
I’m not saying don’t share the gospel with them. I’m saying give them the word, and let the Holy Spirit either draw them to God or harden their heart through it.

Not contradictions but misunderstandings due to scripture being taken out of context or misunderstood due to not properly investigating the actual traditions or meanings as understood from that day. Just as spoken words of today could be misunderstood by people from 2000 years ago due to lack of understanding of our traditions, slang, and meanings of the day. This is why study is in order. That’s an attempt at using logic. Which is human reasoning. Which has no foundation outside of a Christian worldview. God cannot lie because he is truth. If we think we see a contradiction, it’s because there is an aspect or detail that we haven’t understood. The problem is never with God’s word, it’s with us.

Atheists claim a lot of things about Christianity which are simply untrue, e.g. the Bible condones slavery. They really don’t know anything about the Word so it’s best to take their claims with a pinch of salt or better still ignore them completely. If the mood strikes you, give them a bible and ask them to point out a single contradiction and rebut their argument.

I guess it depends on what contradictions specifically. It has been my experience that once someone digs deeper in the scriptures although a passage may be difficult to understand there is often an answer to the contradiction. When I have had questions about a contradiction in the Bible, I research it to find a genuine answer.

I can keep going a hell of a lot more. Innacuracies and contradictions are everywhere in the Bible.
There is nothing wrong with this and it is to be expected for a book written by dozens of authors across multiple centuries.
The problem comes when the believers think it is infallible.

I would suggest further study, reading the passages in their historical and literary context, recognizing cultural influences and author intent. Most times the “contradictions” are easily dismissed and addressed. It’s not an argument; it’s studying.

I love this one. The Bible has footnotes when a verse has translation issues, or when wording did not appear in the original text but did in later translations. If you’re trying to trick somebody with lies and contradictions seems rather silly to put foot notes in the book. Usually the contradiction accusation comes regarding the gospels and the old testament books that give inventories with differing information. In every other subject under the sun it is understood that eyewitness testimony will vary from person to person. I would not even grant that there are contradictions in a debate. I would stage a 30 second event and then ask five different people from the audience to describe it. Done right there.

I think that at face value, they’re right, but only in appearances. Without context of traditions, history, customs, laws of the land at THAT time, etc, the bible DOES appear to have contradictions. The bible can be cherry picked to the point of making God look like a madman to the point that Hitler and Stalin would look like angels. The bible can ALSO be cherry picked to the point of talking about God’s love with absolutely no mention of His wrath. Both sides doing this are a disservice to God who is the God of love AND wrath.

I’ve downloaded PDF documents free online that actually PROVE that the bible DOES contradict itself IF the reader refuses to take into account…..history, laws of the land, customs, etc. Once you bring a thorough understanding of ALL of this together, I BELIEVE that any discrepancies actually go away. I might not like what I read about what I personally believe a loving God should do, but my belief that God may be wrong in something (because I can’t possibly comprehend that kind of purity and righteousness) does NOT negate any research that I’ve done so far showing that the bible does NOT actually contradict itself at all. My research is NOT exhaustive, but it’s pretty comprehensive.

The best source you can show him/her is the Bible. God did not give us all the answers. Some things are a mystery known to God. Once this person heart is open to God, He/she will receive Jesus as their Savior and the Holy Spirit will teach them.

The atheist is trying to hide. Don’t even entertain his argument. (S)he will get you chasing your tail. We don’t owe them an explanation for so-called “contradictions”. They must listen to God’s word, or exercise their free will and go their own way.

They have always said this , straining at things they do not understand, oddly undermining the only book that can give a certain hope of redemption, leaving them with the yawning chasm of hopelessness

It often seems like their are contradictions, but there are none. Each one has a part elsewhere that explains it or support it.
In some cases there were copyist errors, that make no difference to the message at all. -
I have been asking Atheists to show me a Contradiction for over 50 years and I have not seen one yet. That is a real Contradiction, not something they assume is a Contradiction, which isn’t. Everything in the Bible is correct. Whenever in history, it appeared that the Bible did not agree with the Bible, eventually, Science caught up with the Bible, not the other way around.

Ever notice the so-called “athiests” (yeah, right) get downright angry with people who really insists on their belief in a sovereign God….but they wouldn’t get mad at people who believe in unicorns, Santa Claus, or leprechauns. You can’t get mad something you know is not real. And for people who believe in them silly things, you would just dismiss them as fools and not waste 5 seconds of your life debating with them. Because you know they don’t exists. BUT…. So called “athiests” (yeah, right) go to fill 6 lengths and full anger against God belief. And as I’ve said before, talk to them long enough, as I have, and you WILL find they DO believe God exists, they just don’t like it…..

Ask them to be more specific. Likelihood they cannot be so, and then there is no need to argue further as they are mearly spouting off the standard atheist talking points. If they give a specific supposed contradiction give an apologia for the supposed contradiction. If you cannot, gracefully ask that they give you time to look into that and provide them with an answer at a later date and time.

On this post we have Christians and atheist going back and forth. Both the walk of the Christian and the atheist is a walk of faith! As Christians are we showing non believers in this case atheist the love of Christ or are we just attacking them. Is the atheist On my on here to mock the Christian? This should be a forum of seeking answers not finger pointing as to who is right and wrong. Lets ask and answer questions with the spirit of love! I would like to do a zoom on this topic.
