Can someone remind me, did the Jews expect the Messiah…

Can someone remind me, did the Jews expect the Messiah to be the Son of God, or was the Messiah just supposed to be another Moses-like figure in their minds? I am reading through John and came across the account of Jesus talking to the Samaritan woman by the well and it got me wondering, “What exactly were they expecting from the Messiah? Just a political leader and warrior, perhaps? Someone to dethrone Rome and lift up Israel? Did they expect him to be fully human?” Would love your thoughts ?

They expected the Messiah to destroy the Roman empire

The Pharisaic Jews expected the messiah to be like them. A pomp, legalistic, political power to rescue them from Rome, instead of rescuing the world from sin.

So when Christ came as he did, harshly condemning the Pharisaic leaders calling them Vipers and white washed tombs, while making a new movement, they saw him as a threat to their wealth, control, and power instead of their King.

Comment from Judaism 101 http://www.jewfaq.org/mashiach.htm : “The term ‘mashiach’ does not mean ‘savior.’ The notion of an innocent, divine, or semi-divine being who will sacrifice himself to save us from the consequences of our own sins is a purely Christian concept that has no basis in Jewish thought.”

The Jews expected a warrior king who would rid them of being under Roman rule…

Thanks everyone! So they didn’t expect anything divine or supernatural, just another man to rise up and deal with their occupy-ers. God bless you all!

Messianic expectation was developed from the period of 8 century BC prophets. The way they expect and the way Jesus incarnation was totally different… The jews expect The Messiah from the royal family who could liberate them from their enemies…

From the prophesies they had heard, hey expected political leader and a warrior, more of a King David type of king or Messiah. Especially given that he was to a descendant of David
