There were some interesting insights in my recent post on different quotes in history on if there is a place for reason/philosophy in Christianity. Hope no one “cheated” and looked up the quotes before identifying which resonates with you. So here they are with names and descriptions of who said what. 1: “Reason is a whore, the greatest enemy that faith has; it never comes to the aid of spiritual things, but more frequently than not struggles against the divine Word, treating with contempt all that emanates from God.”- -Martin Luther. Major Reformation Father. He is known to have inspired the phrase faith alone and burned copies of Thomas Aquinas’ works. 2: -“What has Athens to do with Jerusalem?”- – -Turtullian. Major early church writer and occasionally described as an early Church Father. Many historians stated that he died as a full member of the Montanists who were a hyper-charismatic sect with an end of the age emphasis. ON the other hand he had some great insights theologically that helped formulate a good articulation of the Trinity before he went schismatic. 3: Faith and reason are like two wings on which the human spirit rises to the contemplation of truth; and God has placed in the human heart a desire to know the truth- – Pope John Paul II. Pope for 26 years. When he was a priest and bishop in communist Poland he could match wit for wit in ancient philosophy and communist dogma. When he spoke as pope in Poland for the first time the many thousands in the crowd yelled “We want God!” for 10 minutes. Later it was discovered that the local KGB attache messaged his superiors in Moscow saying “It is over”.
