Both – He told the thief on the cross that he would be with Him in paradise that day. But then later He traveled to hell and “preached to the imprisoned spirits.” So there’s that, too.

The common theological view is that He descended into Abraham’s Bosom to free those there. Scripturally speaking there is little to no evidence of that.

A key passage in the discussion on where Jesus was for the three days in between His death and resurrection is 1 Peter 3:18–19, which says, “Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit, in which he went and proclaimed to the spirits in prison” (ESV). The word spirit refers to Christ’s spirit. The contrast is between His flesh and spirit, and not between Christ’s flesh and the Holy Spirit. Christ’s flesh died, but His spirit remained alive. Jesus’ body was in the tomb, of course, but His spirit, having departed at His death (Matthew 27:50), was elsewhere for those three days.
Peter gives a little bit of specific information about what happened in those three days between Jesus’ death and resurrection. The KJV says that Jesus “preached” to the spirits in prison (1 Peter 3:19). The Greek word used simply means that Jesus “heralded a message”; the NIV translates it as “made proclamation.” Jesus suffered and died on the cross, His body being put to death. But His spirit was still alive, and He yielded it to the Father (Luke 23:46). According to Peter, sometime between Jesus’ death and His resurrection Jesus made a special proclamation to some imprisoned spirits.
Where were these imprisoned spirits to whom Jesus spoke between His death and resurrection? Nowhere in the Bible are we told that Jesus visited hell. The idea that Jesus went to hell in order to continue His suffering is unbiblical; His suffering ended when He said, “It is finished” upon the cross (John 19:30). The New American Standard Bible says that Jesus went to “Hades” (Acts 2:31), but Hades is not hell. Hades is a term that refers, broadly, to the realm of the dead, a temporary place where the dead await resurrection. Revelation 20:11–15 in the NASB and the NIV makes a clear distinction between Hades and the lake of fire. The lake of fire is the permanent, final place of judgment for the lost. Hades is a temporary place for both the lost and the Old Testament saints.
Our Lord Jesus yielded His spirit to the Father, died physically, and entered paradise, as He had promised the thief on the cross (Luke 23:43). At some time between His death and resurrection, Jesus also visited a place where He delivered a message to spirit beings—probably fallen angels (see Jude 1:6); these spirits were probably imprisoned because they were somehow involved in a grievous sin before the flood in Noah’s time (1 Peter 3:20). Peter does not tell us what Jesus proclaimed to the imprisoned spirits, but it could not have been a message of redemption, since angels cannot be saved (Hebrews 2:16). What Jesus proclaimed was probably a declaration of His victory over Satan and his hosts (1 Peter 3:22; Colossians 2:15).
Ephesians 4:8–10 may give another clue regarding Jesus’ activities in the three days between His death and resurrection. Quoting Psalm 68:18, Paul says about Christ, “When he ascended on high, he took many captives” (Ephesians 4:8). The ESV puts it that Christ “led a host of captives.” This could refer to an event not elsewhere described in Scripture, namely, that Jesus gathered all the redeemed who were in paradise and took them to their permanent dwelling in heaven. That is, after securing their salvation on the cross, Jesus brought Abraham, David, Joshua, Daniel, the beggar Lazarus, the thief on the cross, and everyone else who had previously been justified by faith, and led them from Hades to their new spiritual home.
All of this is to say that the Bible isn’t entirely clear what exactly Christ did for the three days between His death and resurrection. From what we can tell, though, He did two things: He comforted the departed saints and brought them to their eternal home, and He proclaimed His victory over the fallen angels who are kept in prison. What we can know for sure is that Jesus was not giving anyone a second chance for salvation; we face judgment after death (Hebrews 9:27), not a second chance. Also, Jesus was not suffering in hell; His work of redemption was finished on the cross.

Jesus Christ went to tartarus to proclaim the kingdom of God and king himself to the fallen angels who sinned before and after the flood ie spirits imprisoned ,Jude6-7,1peter3:19,2peter2:4 and to paradise where He conquered devil of the power of death and hell,Rev1:18,Col2:14-17,Heb2:14-15.

To understand exactly where Jesus went, look at the story Jesus told of the rich man and Lazarus (Luke 16:19–31).
This was not simply a parable, for Jesus used an actual human name. Thus, we can conclude that Jesus was giving us an actual glimpse of life beyond the grave.
The story describes a place called Hades, where there was both a place of comfort and torment. In the Old Covenant, when a person died, he went to Hades a place of torment, which was separated from the place of comfort by a great chasm… If the person was a believer, he went to the place of comfort in the bosom of Abraham Hebrews 11:13.

I believe he was in hell. He got Judus out of hell. He forgave him for his betrayal. He was Jesus friend for a long time. Then on the third day he rose from hell and the dead. Visited the apostles for a little while and then Acended to Be at the right hand of the Holy Father.

The location of Jesus was not Hell (gahenna) the final abode of the lost. In Acts 2 the better translations just use the Greek word “hades” which means “unseen” or the unseen real of the dead.

He did go to Hell to preach to the spirits in prison (angels) who disobeyed long ago (1 Peter 3:18-20). He also brought those captive in the lower paradise under the earth
to the present paradise heaven itself.“But to each one of us grace has been given as Christ apportioned it. It says;
“When he ascended on high,

and gave gifts to his people. ”(What does “he ascended” mean except that he also descended to the lower earthly regions?” He who descended is the very one who ascended higher than all the heavens, in order to fill the whole universe.)

Wow. I don’t see this as a stupid question at all. I don’t know the OP well enough to know if this is antagonistic, but there are baby Christians that read these posts and I’m disappointed in the responses “What do you think?” “Stupid question.” Seriously?? I’ve been taught that He was in hell preaching to those who haven’t heard the gospel yet, but where He was is NOT in the bible. Only speculation is drawn, which actually makes the ABOVE responses of “What do you think?” or “Stupid question” that much DUMBER since the answer would appear to be “we honestly don’t know” and it’s more than ok to acknowledge that rather than belittle anyone asking that question. To the above GROW UP.

1 Peter 3:19-20 gives a brief text of his whereabouts during his 3 days death…. He went to the spirit world to proclaim the gospel unto them and to cry repentance into their hearings….. this he did with other saints who were dead.
This is a doctrine…. follow James council in James 1:5-7 for the clarification of this context..if it’s true the Holy Ghost will testify of it to your heart. -
1 Peter 3:18-20 Jesus went to preach the gospel message to those who willfully and perversely disobeyed in the days prior to Noah’s flood. They perished in the flood and were held in prison until Jesus preached to them and offered them salvation. This is where the Spirit of Jesus went after He died.

Abraham’s bosom. Paradise near hell but not hell. You see this when one of those on the cross who died went to hell and was begging abraham to get across but abraham couldn’t because of the abyss that separated them in between. This was a place that those who trusted in God went to until the death of Christ and Christ went to them and ministered to them. Nobody goes there anymore.
