   Jesus was using a semetic way of speaking to make a point. You see this in two ways. First, he responds to a question with a question. Second, he points out a key insight in the rich synagogue cheif leader’s theology by calling out the Jewish theology in which they both believe.

   Jesus is highlighting the Jewish teaching that only God is good. To be good is a divine attribute. So, by calling Jesus good, by his own lips the synagogue ruler is proclaiming that Jesus is God. This means that through this semetic retoric device Jesus is affirming his own divinity by taking a moment to point out the very theology of the Jews. This is probably what Jesus was doing on the road to Emmaus as well.
