Baptism is symbolic argument- The argument is that baptism is merely on outward sign of inward grace. Baptism is not necessary but symbolic so that other people can see it. Rom. 6:3-4

Answering the argument:

A. the text does not say that baptism is merely symbolic.

B. The text does say that baptism puts us into Christ Jesus.

C. 2 Tim. 2:10; without being put into Christ we have no salvation.

D. Rom. 6:3-4 also says we are buried with him through baptism into death. —> Christ shed his blood in death. In baptism we come into contact with his blood.

E. after baptism the text says we are to walk in newness of life. if an outward sign were correct, before being baptized we would already be walking in a newness of life.

F. Rom.6:3-4 and 1 Peter 3:21 (KJV) making the claim that “the like figure” shows only symbolic is problematic.
1. the problem is that this “figure” saves us. Type= water saved the people on the ark. Antitype= water saves us.
1. Baptism is an appeal to God for a good conscience. why does one get a good conscience when one is baptized?

a. in baptism the guilt is taken away.

b. in baptism, the sin is taken away.

    baptism is not internal or anything of saving . Jesus did the saving on the cross . adding to his finish work is just blasphemy.

    Baptism.is a grave…you die to yourown self by entering into the grave as the old man and raising a new creation ot of the grave in Jesus christ

    Erick Clemens, Rom 6: 3-4 isn’t talking about water baptism. The Bible mentions three Christian baptisms. [1]The rebirth. 1 Cor 12: 13. [2]The baptism in the Holy Ghost. Matt 3: 11. Acts 1: 4–5. and baptism in water. Acts 8: 36–38. And for anyone to say Rom 6: 3–4 is water baptism, Is saying water is greater than the Holy Spirit. Rom 6 is the rebirth, NOT water baptsm.Matthew, Mark, Peter,Paul and Ananias, along with every early disciple knew that water baptism doesn’t save, cleans or regenerate.

    People the bible clearly states to be born again you MUST be born of the water and of the Spirit. We must be submerged in to death as Christ died and rise in to new life as Christ rose, new creation.

    ABSOLUTELY right. And – baptism in Jesus name, the only saving name, is essential.

    In Acts 8, the eunuch Phillip preached to didn’t wait to have a “baptism party.” He obeyed the gospel and was baptized immediately!

    I agree that baptism saves and I believe that water alone isn’t sufficient for salvation. It must be water in connection with God’s Word – Jesus pointed out that disciples are made by baptizing and teaching together. Not one or the other.

    To another point mentioned in the comments: “baptism” literally means washing with water. How do we separate that reality from the meaning of the word? Washing with water and the teaching (the Word) is the baptism of the Holy Spirit.

    Baptismal water is like anointing oil. It has a spiritual power to it for the cleansing and renewal. This is why demons are affected by baptism and manifest during the water baptism. Otherwise it would just be a sign.

    Acts 10:44-47 –

    44 While Peter was still saying these things, the Holy Spirit fell on all who heard the word.
    45 And the believers from among the circumcised who had come with Peter were amazed, because the gift of the Holy Spirit was poured out even on the Gentiles.
    46 For they were hearing them speaking in tongues and extolling God. Then Peter declared,
    47 “Can anyone withhold water for baptizing these people, who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have?”

    They received the Holy Spirit before water baptism, they were saved already.

    > Redemption received by faith
    > God is justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus Crist
    Question : Why is baptism not mentioned even once in the whole passage ?

    Further :
    “For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not before God. For what does the Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness.” Now to the one who works, his wages are not counted as a gift but as his due. And to the one who does not work but believes in him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is counted as righteousness, just as David also speaks of the blessing of the one to whom God counts righteousness apart from works:..”Rom.4:2-6(ESV)

    > Belief of Abraham counted as righteousness
    compared with
    One who believes in Jesus, whose faith is counted as righteousness.

    Further:
    “That is why his faith was “counted to him as righteousness.” But the words “it was counted to him” were not written for his sake alone, but for ours also. It will be counted to us who believe in him who raised from the dead Jesus our Lord, who was delivered up for our trespasses and raised for our justification.” Rom.4:22,23(ESV)

    > Believers will be counted righteous based on belief in Him who raised Jesus from the dead.
    > Baptism not mentioned at all.

    BAPTISM DOES NOT CONFER RIGHTEOUSNESS / SALVATION. BELIEF IN THE LORD JESUS CHRIST ALONE DOES. BAPTISM RIGHTLY FOLLOWS SALVATION.

    That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.
