You can’t be a Christian and Capitalist at the same…

You can’t be a Christian and Capitalist at the same time!

Here by Capitalist I am referring to monopoly capitalist, and Greedy Capitalist.

While people may own the means of production, and channels of distribution, and while any person, and groups, have a right to construct and own property. It is not only wrong but evil to be a greedy capatalist, have monopoly capital.

Clearly being a Christian is a paradox to being a monopoly capitist and having capitalistic greed.

This is so because, while the initial purpose of capitalism was to democratize the economy, the modern capitalist have shown to be selfish, unfair, corrupt, and abusive.

How can you be a follower of Jesus Christ and participate,if not perpetuate exploitation, inequality, morden slavery, robbery, and selfishness? These are the true characteristics of monopoly and greedy capitalism.

Christianity in its core governance, is a balanced system between theocracy (God’s Will, and rule) and democracy(Human Will, and power management). How many times has God blessed human to create wealth, to prosper, and to be delivered out of poverty?

This is dipicted very well by Genesis 1:28 ” God blessed them and said be Fruitful, Multiply, and have Dominion”. Clearly these blessings are fundamentally an economic blessing. We can infer, unambiguously that God blessed humans to produce, share, and use.

The core value of Christianity is love(greaters commandments). This implies that a Christian Economy is (should be) a love driven economic culture and structure. Eve n with venture Capitalist , or bank Capitalist, they should empower and develop others, and society with their capital.

Christ Economic Paradirm would be:
>To produce what is enough or what is needed
>To distribute fairly, equally, and properly
>To consume what is necessary

This does not suggest a classless or sameness society. Also this is not necessary socialism. However it is a balance between capitalism and socialism. Therefore, Christians can be a Social Capitalist, democratizing Economy, particularly through a “loving” manner of mobilizing and distributing Capital.

Since God is a creative and dynamic being, naturally based on the law of resemblance, Christian economy would be a unified economy, having a balance between “the market and the state intervention”.

The pillar of a Christian type of economy will be the “golden rule” do unto others as you would do unto you.

In other words monopoly and greed should be non- existent in a Christian Nation or groups. There will be a sharing of the means of ownerships of production between investors and labors.

Production Relations under Christ would be guided by cooperation and not contradiction between “employer” and “employees”, because they will be engaged in a love relationship of ownership, and constructive production.

Grace and Mercy will be an culture between diverse classes as they work to restore or to build, inspired by common purpose and mutual benefit. As result a Christ based economic has no place for monopoly capital and Capitalist greed. Hence I argue, you can’t be a Christian and a Capitalist at the same time.

  1. Daniel First says:

The Bible does not support a specific modern economic theory, but the theology of the Bible does address economic factors. (Forgive me for not looking up the verses for the sake of time)
-From the very beginning it is clear God made man to work. He didnt give Adam a hammock and a golf bag, He gave Adam a job
-Able bodied people should be required to work and provide for themselves and their family. Someone who wont provide for their family is worse than an unbeliever
-Able bodied people should also work with the intention of earning enough to share with those who cannot work to provide for themselves (infirmed, orphaned, widowed, etc)
-A man who WILL NOT work, should not eat. A hungry stomach drives people to be a good worker
-people who work wisely, diligently, and with a spirit of excellence have a much better chance of financial blessing
-people who work with a slack hand or will not work at all should expect poverty.
-We should be practicing generosity gladly
-Fair scales should be used and fair wages paid

  2. Jelaya Stewart says:

Clearly the Bible supports more of a capitalist view rather than a socialist one.

  3. Stacy Hutchinson says:

Democracy = mob rule. We are a Constitutional Republic in America. If people would vote with their dollars over convenience, those so called greedy capitalists wouldn’t have the money they do.

  4. Todd Carpentier says:

Is it ok to be a greedy Socialist? A greedy Communist? LOL, seems like a futile effort to be charging at economic systems. There is no economic system in existence that doesn’t run off of greed. None. Jesus doesn’t care about our politics. The reality of it is, the most successful economic system in terms of ensuring the maximum number of people are taken care of is the capitalist societies. Unfortunately for you my friend, socialism always leads to hard tyranny. Thanks for selling us on it though. Can we get back to God now?

  5. Reece Phatudi says:

If you read carefully, you note that as a Christian Economic system is neither capitalism nor socialism.

Also do note, that my introduction embrace historical fact of economic oppression, hence I said, the initial purpose of capitalism was to democratize the economy.

At its inception, at least, in our modern day, economic power was still in the hand of Monarchies in advance society, and feudal lords elsewhere.

Now, the struggle between good and evil, is also on the economic front. Christ don’t judt give you salvation, but he restores the nature, subsequently the economy.

Hence, this specific question of Capitalism and Christianity is important.

You are wrong not to focus on the topic by bringing up other systems, they too will be addressed.

  6. Rizaldy S. Menor says:

When Jesus says give to Cesars what is due him, is this an indirect support to Capitalism or Socialism?

  7. Reece Phatudi says:

    Pay taxes

  8. Andy Covington says:

Capitalism is merely the freedom to exchange goods and services. You have perverted the idea by throwing the adjective “greedy” in front of it. The problem that you describe is with greed – not capitalism! The Bible clearly teaches capitalism. You misunderstand God’s commands that we be freely generous with the idea of socialism which has nothing to do with generosity! It is forcefully taking from those who are productive and giving to those who are not!

  9. Dale Somers says:

If the truth sets you free then capitalism is closer to doing that financially than any other economic theory .

  10. David Funk says:

So if I have a better idea than a laborer I should pay him equal to me even though it was my idea. Even in a semi socialist economy you fail to mention those that don’t work, the ones that gamble their earnings. Their “needs” aren’t needs. Capitalism rewards those that risk and lead change. Socialism even a semi socialism would be taking from that. Were not meant to change economic even political structure at a macro level. Implement your ideas in a local church and see how that goes. If its like the book of acts people will applaud you but that will be because they followed the bibles teaching on microeconomics. They also gave to Christians only it seems. They cared for the poor but the needy referred to in acts 2 seem to be only Christians. This would be more a social construct than an economic system if governance.

  11. Reece Phatudi says:

So you are going to ignore history, that Christianity did not stop developing on clan levels, that it actually developed as tribal, fuedal and mornach systems?

You are going to ignore what I said that it does not mean I support Socialism?

You are going to ignore key principles which I raise based on Christ?

  12. Daniel First says:

One thing that never changes is our desire to bring in Jesus to endorse our personal preferences.

  13. Stan Wosnicki says:

    Wrong.

  14. Reece Phatudi says:

Who is talking about Socialism? Who claims there was?

  15. Rick Holtsclaw says:

Odd, you never see a communist or socialist Christian.

  16. Reece Phatudi says:

It is not odd, most socialists are Marxists, that is atheism. There are those who attempted it under the banner of Liberation Theology. However, as I said on my other post you can’t be a Christian and Marxists/socialist.

  17. Tyler Green says:

You’re implying that the sins of selfishness, greed, pride, etc. are caused by capitalism, which is just not accurate considering there are/have been communists, socialists, etc. that have been selfish, greedy, prideful, etc.

Sin is not an economical issue. It’s a heart issue.

  18. Terry Thompson says:

Nonsense. Tithing is meant as the check on greed. People confuse success and greed, particularly when they are greedy and jealous. If God blesses you with wealth, be humble and thankful, but do not limit his blessing. I bet I could find a lot more anti-God with “other” economic systems then with capitalism

  19. Caleb Backholm says:

Capitalism is people serving each other. It has nothing at all to do with greed. It is very Biblical

  20. Jereme McAlpin says:

If you’re going to make the claim that Christians can’t be capitalists, you should understand what those terms actually mean, not the definition you give them. Maybe read a couple basic economic books too. The “capitalism” you describe is called crony capitalism and is the result of socialism. You should stop teaching.

  21. Brandon Sims says:

Shame you went through all that work to be met with “buddy, ANYTHING can be perverted by greedy and evil people.” Look at Christianity itself. Used by greedy people to get rich since right before Jesus died on that cross ( judas ? )

  22. Randy Emmons says:

The most glaring problem with this article is the author takes a theme; Capitalism in this case, and then proceeds to assume and describe it as greedy and sinful without ever attempting to show ‘why’ or ‘how’ it is sinful.

He also ignores examples of capitalism presented in scripture by lifestyle descriptions or by parables.

    It’s a terribly flawed presentation.

  23. Herb Van Schoick says:

Abraham was a capitalist, you misunderstand the term.

  24. Gregory Kayko says:

Its not wrong to be a capitalist. It’s wrong to be a greedy anything.

  25. Jordan Bourke says:

Couldn’t you have shortened this and just say you can’t be a Christian and greedy?

  26. Reece Phatudi says:

So you guys support monopoly capital? Is this not hypocrital?

  27. Daniel First says:

It is not godly to love money or hoard money, but it is also not godly to enable laziness by giving provision to able bodied people who refuse to work. All of us have limited resources and do not have the means to support those who cant work on top of helping those who wont work

  28. Cesar Trevino Jr. says:

Isn’t that like saying you cannot be a Christian and a sinner at the same time. Then who was 1 John written for. Know what I mean.

  29. Reece Phatudi says:

I see that many don’t comprehend that Christianity is essentially a system of ideas:Religious Fundamentalism

Therefore, based on its political principles it suppose to coordinate economic and social activities.

  30. Barry Beutell says:

Capitalism is a bad system unless you compare it to any other system. At it’s core, capitalism is a system were you take out what you put in.
The apostles, save Matthew the tax collector, where capitalists.

  31. Micki Shilvock says:

Peter was a capitalist. He was in business for himself, along with John and James. They caught and sold fish.

  32. Garrett StClair says:

Communism only works in 2 places
    Heaven where it’s not needed
Hell where it’s already in place

  33. Anthony Barber says:

Do not let immorality or impurity or and kind of GREED be named among you….Eph.5:3, NASB.

  34. Wyatt McIntyre says:

Interesting argument, though flawed. First, Capitalism and Monopoly Capitalism are not interchangeable terms. A monopoly capitalist only makes up a small segment of what capitalism is. It would be like using the term Pentecostal Christian or Lutheran Christian or Baptist Christian, etc interchangeably with Christian.

Secondly, Christianity is not compatible or incompatible with Capitalism. What is compatible or incompatible is how it is used. Capitalism, like any other system man designs, can be used for good or for evil. Capitalism can be used to fund the mission of the church, orphanages, care for widows, etc, or it can be used to exploit. Your narrow perspective ignores that fact or any good that capitalists can or have done. That is assigning the worst possible motives, while stereotyping an entire group of people, which, I am relatively certain, are not Christian principles.

  35. Wyatt McIntyre says:

One final note, if that is your honest opinion, then you really shouldn’t be on the internet as, for as much as the internet was intended to democratize free speech, communications channels, etc, it is used for all sorts of evils, child pornography, exploitation, the promotion of slavery, blasphemy, heresy, etc. Applying a broad, encompassing brush to anything, while focusing only on the negative means that, really, you should just be completely withdrawn from society.

  36. Eric Bennett says:

Also, just because a nation is labeled “Christian” doesn’t mean it is “Christian.” We are far from a Christian nation now.

  37. Yogi Liau says:

    Agree. God never permitted capitalism.

Leviticus 27:24 (ASV) In the year of jubilee the field shall return unto him of whom it was bought, even to him to whom the possession of the land belongeth.

Leviticus 23:22 (ASV) And when ye reap the harvest of your land, thou shalt not wholly reap the corners of thy field, neither shalt thou gather the gleaning of thy harvest: thou shalt leave them for the poor, and for the sojourner: I am Jehovah your God.

  38. Reece Phatudi says:

Christians can and are participating in Satan agenda and organizations.

So this is not an attack but a call to mindful of the mission of Christocentric in socioeconomic matters.

  39. Ian Kronick says:

You assume being a capitalist means one is greedy. I mean, it IS in the Bible “if you don’t work, you don’t eat.” The Levites were only included in the festivals every 7 years. To be honest, socialism is more greedy than capitalism. Socialism: you earn what everybody works for.
Capitalism: you earn what you work for.
Under capitalism, you can give whatever you want out of charity. Under socialism, everything you earn belongs to everyone else as well.

  40. Reece Phatudi says:

Most here have a thinking problem. For example

When one raises a point, they digress by raising an opposite point and not focus on the actual point. I see it in many posts as well.

If one say ‘a man’ instead on focusing on a man, they say what about ‘a woman’. That is a thinking problem, really.

Secondly, the other problem is, when one raises a point instead of critiquing the points raised, you add your own points then negatively criticize the actual point, that is a serious thinking problem.

Thirdly, the is no sense of building others, I mean when one write and post something, we should not just tear them up, but we should build them up. Christians behaving like skeptics and atheist. That is a serious thinking problem.

Thanks to those who make great inputs, I am learning, and I will polish my work.

  41. Bryce Baliko says:

The Old Testament is very specific about property rights in ancient Israel.

  42. Junior Cabal says:

If I understand correctly your viewpoint, as a Christian we should not adhere to “greedy capitalism “..my question is do you (the author) produced your own products? Such as food, clothing, shelter and even the gadgets to promote those ideology .If you purchase those necessities, where they made by and distributed solely by “socialist capitalism ” ?

  43. Noah Mackenroth says:

Silliness. One certainly can’t be a Marxist.

  44. Freddy Jocksand Diaz says:

Much worst is to pretend to be a Christian and be a socialist or communist. That is even worse.

  45. Noah Mackenroth says:

    Reece Phatudi

Maybe English is your second language – but are you aware that when you tell people that they have a “thinking problem”, you are essentially calling them “mentally ill”? Perhaps “insane”?

    Is that your intent?

  46. Johnathon Morris says:

Never heard of a Christian capitalist? Capitalists don’t have to be greedy, their are greedy and generous capitalists alike. To say a Christian cannot be a capitalist is false. Now to say a true Christian must not be greedy is true and a thing completely different than the first.

  47. Reece Phatudi says:

My opening statement, I said here by Capitalist I mean…..

  48. Keith Knight says:

You obviously know little about capitalism. The greatest system ever to produce wealth is capitalism. Charity comes only and exclusively from wealth.

Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may HAVE, TO GIVE to him that needeth
The goal of work is gain wealth, to HAVE wealth.
    Why? To GIVE.
The Philanthropy modernized by Sir Francis Bacon in the 1600s has been defined by American capitalists. John D. Rockefeller. The 21st centuries Bill Gates, the world second wealthiest man, isn’t hording all his wealth. He has given away more than 40 billion dollars. Their charity doesn’t qualify them for heaven, but it does show where charity comes from.

  49. Reece Phatudi says:

Mesopotamia, Egypt, Pursia, Babylon, Greece, etc in BC were all wealthy, actually more than any man of God.

While I am for wealth creation, I am against exploration, injustice, abuse of labor, etc.

Secondly, I take into congnition that AD there has been stages of development for Christianity, amazingly just like Israelites of old testament age.

These developments are in three fold:Politics, Economic and Religiously

  50. Joel Postma says:

Alot of Labels thrown around in the post. Labels mean different things to different folks. Perhaps it’s best to define some of the bigger labels to prevent confusion that Labeling causes.
