Thanks. For a minute it looked like the wording was indicating all we had to do t receive the free gift is to be guilty. One might assume that there is no need to be righteous

We still have to do our part to receive that gift.

The righteous if truly righteous do not need salvation.

This is how I understand the free gift of salvation.
When you accept Jesus as Lord and Savior, you are inviting Him and the Holy Spirit to live inside you. Making you a temple of the Holy Spirit.
Romans 5:5 Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us.
God is love (1 John 4:8) and His love inside us changes us for the better.
Then obeying His commandments becomes easy.
1 John 5:3 For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome.
It’s all about the love of God. And Him in us. -
