Navigating those tough hills
“The statement at the core of all disagreements: I’m right, you’re wrong.” ― Charles F. Glassman, Brain Drain The Breakthrough That Will Change Your Life
Progress is made at the point of agreement.
The other side of the coin is: focusing on what you disagree on stops progress in its track.
Bottom line, when trying to achieve something that involves others (which is almost everything), the pathway to success is paved by the things you agree on…not the things you disagree on.
It goes something like this…
- Find the one thing you can agree on.
- Move forward until a disagreement stops you.
- Find another thing you agree on.
- Start moving forward again until a disagreement stops you.
- Repeat step 3 and 4 until you succeed or there is a disagreement that is insurmountable.
What you will find is that in most cases there are enough things you can agree on that eventually you can make your way around most hills of contention and arrive to a successful conclusion.
On the other hand, if you only focus on the things that divide you (as important as they may be to you) you’re never get anything done.
The ONE THING for today: When working with people, there are a few hills that you must die on, the rest can be navigated around if you’re willing to agree on a route together.
