Unity is not motivating a group to speak the same words, but to speak the same language.”

__Jeff O’Leary, The Centurion Principles

In my reflections this morning it seems to me that I came across an impossible appeal from the Bible.

Paul, writing to the Corinthians, made this request:

I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another in what you say and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly united in mind and thought.

I Corinthians 1:10, NIV

How’s that working for you? For your family, your job, your church?

My experience so far has not been sterling. And honestly compels me to admit that I am the problem as often as not!

Being perfectly united in mind and thought about everything appears to be impossible in this life. But here’s one thing we can shoot for and if we get this right the rest will taken care of.

Let’s agree on this one thing: Knowing, loving, and obeying Jesus is the paramount priority and passionate pursuit of our life.

Or as St. Augustine is reputed to have said: “Love God and do as you please.”

This is a dangerous thought in the hands/mind of an unregenerate person, but to a person, family or church who will at least agree on that one thing – the supremacy and lordship of Jesus in all things – it makes perfect sense.

Bottom line, in this life, we will almost certainly not agree on everything or please each other all the time, but if we can get this one thing right then we will be perfectly united in all that truly matters.

And in the end, if we get that right, Jesus will help us with all the rest.

The ONE THING for today: Make knowing, loving, and obeying Jesus Christ the paramount priority and passionate pursuit of your life. Get that right and do as you please.
