I remember hearing about a wife who got tired of her husband coming home drunk each night so she came up with a clever way of stopping him – she keep moving the furniture.
Having lived in many different homes over the years and stayed in countless hotel rooms, there’s something I’ve learned about walking in the dark effectively – you’ve got to know where the furniture is. Once you’ve got the immoveable objects figured out then you can navigate the dark.
And that is true for all of life.
So let me ask you, what are the immoveables in your life?
If God is not at the center of your immoveables then you’re still subject to the irresistible force that can come along and blow your little immoveable out of the water.
“When I say, ‘God’, I mean a unique, personal, plural, spiritual, eternally self-existent, transcendent, immanent, omniscient, immutable, holy, loving Being, the Creator and Ruler of the entire universe and the Judge of all mankind.”
_John Blanchard
Trusting in that nest egg you’ve worked so hard to accumulate? One big downturn can change everything.
Counting on your connections? One heart can stop beating and you’re back to square one.
Counting on your youth and good looks? Trust me, there’s a shelf life on that too.
And somehow I don’t think you and I are going to be on the short list when it comes time to hand out those trans-human-mind-in-a-machine Borg creatures that are supposed to give us eternal life. (And who really wants that anyway!?)
But settle your mind on this one immoveable: There is a living, sentient Being who is omnipotent, all-knowing, and pure love who we are invited to call Father because he purposefully created you and cares for you and promises to make all things work together for your good. Get that settled and then walking in the dark of an uncertain future is manageable.
But reject Him and you are at the mercy of a soulless, lifeless, frozen and dark universe that has no thought or care for you.
That’s no way to live.
Forever, O Lord, your word is settled in heaven.
Your faithfulness endures to all generations; You established the earth, and it abides.
They continue this day according to Your ordinances, for all are Your servants.
