“If you want to repeat history, do it the way it’s always been done.  If you want to change history, do it the way it’s never been done before.  History makers are rule breakers.”

_Mark Batterson, The Grave Robber: How Jesus Can Make Your Impossible Possible

For much of my life I’ve been that guy who felt a little stifled by the rules. I suppose that is why Batterson’s quote stood out to me.

And as far as it goes, I couldn’t agree with him more.

But experience (another way of saying pain) has taught me to not read quotes like Batterson’s as an either/or proposition.

Sometimes the best thing that can happen is for history to be repeated.

Yes, there is a time and place for breaking the rules, but before making the plunge it is wise to ask, “Why is that rule there?”

As the old saying goes: Good fences (rules) make good neighbors.

The ONE THING for today: Before tearing down the fence (break the rule), at least mention it to your neighbor.

“Change works only when people believe it is happening for them, not to them.”
