Two Things Done Alone
“Every man must do two things alone; he must do his own believing and his own dying.” -Martin Luther
Salvation is not gained by osmosis. You must have a moment where you believe on Christ for yourself. You can accept Christ; you can reject Christ, but you can’t ignore Him. He will never go away. No one can follow Christ for you; you must take hold of His invitation for yourself.
Claiming God through a Christian heritage is only bragging on the right choices your family has made in the past. Their choices are not passed on to you. You must choose Christ alone. When you do make the choice, then you are not alone anymore. You are part of an eternal redemptive family.
Now, what about your own dying? Well, that too must be done on your own. However, as Christ followers, we die by living fully human in Him. The bible says in Galatians 2:20, “I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.”
We believe alone. We do our own dying. And the fruit of doing those two things will one day overtake us. Read it for yourself.
Revelation 21:1-4
1 Then I saw “a new heaven and a new earth,” for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. 2 I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. 3 And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. 4 ‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’ or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”
