In the fifties T. L. Lowery believed that America’s No. 1 problem was segregation. This was a predominant belief among the Church of God. The denomination was still a southern Appalachian church. I recall a sermon in my home church strongly advocating the belief that blacks were descendants of apes and were not of the same species as the white race. I believe this was a common message in the 40s and 50s.
How far has the COG come since that time? What are your thoughts?
Did you ever hear the sermons about the curses against Cain and Ham (Canaan)?
It was not just the Church of God, but the Assemblies of God more so.
It was all protestant denominations particularly conservative denominations ie SBC etc
There was only one Pentecostal Evangelist who preached strong against Segregation and that was Pentecostal Evangelist A. A. Allen.
I was literally shocked to hear President Lyndon B Johnson make derogatory statements about the black person. I had always thought good of President Johnson and was very surprised his recorded statements.
Here in Memphis Adrian Rogers was a strong segregationist.
being raised in Middle Tennessee I was raised in strong racism of the South. I was placed into an integrated institution, U.S. Army.

Paul, the Apostle, cleared that up over 2,000 years ago in his sermon on Mars Hill, Athens Greece; “Has of one blood, all nations (people) people made.”
Rosamond Ave COG renamed and on Whitten Road.
The Church under Pastor Edmond Stallings sold the property on Rosamond Ave and built further out on the outskirts of Memphis on Whitten Road about 1972. The Church was then called Whitten Heights COG.

No matter what nationality you are we were all created equal & we were all made in the image of God. Maybe you should come to Sumiton Church of God and you would see what a wonderful congreg ation that truly loves each regardless of the color of skin. Wanda.
