Once Sanctified Always Sanctified? (OSAS)

For those who believe in sanctification as a one-time event that occurs after a person gets saved, what do you say of someone who is sanctified, but then falls into sin. The sin could be bearing false witness against his neighbor, adultery, theft, or one of any number of sins.

What would you say? Would you say he lost his sanctification? Would he need to be sanctified again? Would you say he never was really sanctified to begin with? (Reminds me of Baptists and the other kind of OSAS.)

This topic came up in a discussion with brother Melvin Harter, and I would still be interested in what he has to say.

Have you ever encountered someone who was so convinced he had never sinned after a certain point of time, that he just wouldn’t confess his sins or admit he was wrong?

some of us believe that sanctification follows the new birth subsequently. If he is born again, I say that he lost his sanctification, backslid. He needs to return to the fold from which he forsook.

I’m not certain we can speak to his salvation only his profession of faith. If he backslides, openly we treat him as an outcast and pray for his professing of faith back into the fold.

There are guidelines and qualifications for his reinstatement.

Charles Page, of the fornicator in I Corinthians 5, Paul said to deliver him over to Satan for the destruction of the flesh that his spirit might be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus. In the context of speaking of many getting sick and dying, Paul said that when we are judged, we are chastized that we might not be condemned with the world.

I am curious on what those who hold to the views that were so popular in the early 1900’s among Holiness groups, about sanctification, believe about this. If someone is sanctified and backslides, does he have to get re-sanctified according to that way of viewing things, or is that impossible because he wouldn’t have backslid if he were sanctified?

I asked Melvin Harter, one of the most outspoken proponents of that view on the forum, but he seems to not be too interested in answering.

He remained a chosen one of Christ’s but he had to be restored back to fellowship.
