In the Greek, God is written θεος (theos), but in ancient manuscripts, they would often just write the first and last letter with a line over it when it came to sacred names, so θεος would be abbreviated θς (Eastern Orthodox artwork still often contains these so-called “nomina sacra”). The Greek word for “he” in this situation is ος. If your manuscript was in bad enough shape or the handwriting was bad enough, I could see one being mistaken for the other easily. In such a case, textual critics generally go with the reading that is best attested by older sources, which is most likely ος (he).

KJV is considered the most accurate translation. I looked it up in the Blue Letter Bible, and in the original language, the word for God is used.
