Are the two witnesses in the bible actual people or is this not to be taken literally?

Careful with Revelation. It comes with consequences and repercussions. It is interpreted by Jesus’s words and teachings. It also repeats and interprets itself. Forget what you thought you knew. It’s a whole new ball game when it comes to this book and what we thought we knew and had been taught.

I believe them to be Enoch and Elijah because neither one died but were rather called up

Actual people. The prophet Malachi informs us that Elijah will return before the great day of the Lord and the reason the Jews maintain an empty seat every Passover Seder.

The question is who are the two olive trees. Cause it says the two witnesses are the two olive trees. Well who are the two olive trees in the Bible? Are the two olive trees the Jews in one tree then when Jesus came we branched off to a second olive tree ( Christians) not sure I’m trying to still figure it out too

There are 2 kinds of symbols in Revelation: those explained right there, and those explained elsewhere in Scripture. Don’t follow the “house of cards” teachings that impose “symbols” all over the place. The two witnesses are two witnesses. And, based on the miracles they perform, could very well be Moses & Elijah.

I say literally. The Bible doesn’t really say who these two witnesses are that are mentioned in Revelation appearing during the Great Tribulation. Some say it will be Moses and Elijah since it was them who appeared with Jesus on the mount of transfiguration. But I think it will be Elijah and possibly Enoch. Because the Bible says that once appointed unto man to die. So we all have an appointment with death. According to scripture, Enoch and Elijah did not die. It says Enoch walked with God and was not, indicating he was taken up to heaven, sort of like a rapture. Elijah was taken to heaven in a whirlwind. We know from Revelation that these two witnesses are killed, then later rise up and are taken into heaven. Thus, if these two are Enoch and Elijah, then they had their appointment with death at this point.
I can’t be certain of this, but it is a plausible idea.

Represents the law and the prophets. Folks when reading scripture thats written to a different audience and not to us we have to view it from their point of view not ours

They are old and New Testament, the word of God is his witness. Symbolic language is use in revelation. No human dies and come to live, to prophecy not the way God operates.

Hello so I’ve been studying eschatology for the last 10 years now and yes the two witnesses of Revelation 11 are two literal people. The comments above saying they are not, don’t listen to them, read the chapter for what it says literally. The two men will torment the world for 1260 days. At that last day the Antichrist will overpower them and kill them and three days later God will bring them back to life at which that point they’ll be called to heaven. Two literal people, the Bible though does NOT state who they are. A lot of people assume it is Elijah and Enoch because they did not die. Others say it’s Moses and Elijah or some other OT combination. In my opinion I believe these will be two completely new and different people that we don’t know of.

Well if you look at context of chapter 11 shows john being told to measure the standing temple not a future temple and it even tells us about it’s destruction 1260 days or 42 months or 3 1/2 years later so as usual the author speaking to the 7 churches of thst day not ours uses this symbol language telling us that what Jesus said would happen did happen and the word of God is fulfilled but the dispensational system says no no it can’t be right

It’s not exclusively people. It’s two lines of testimony. Two people or things that bear witness that the offending party is guilty.

From my understanding I think they’ll be two literal people. Many believe that they will be Elijah and Moses, I think that is possible, but I also think that Enoch and Elijah are two strong candidates as they never died.

In my understanding they are real people. In fact they are moses and Elijah. If you recall the transfiguration those were the two who were on the mountain with jesus. This has a lot of significance, plus if you look at the miracles they perform they seem to correlate with moses and Elijah. Plus the fact that they die in a literal way seems to suggest that they are real people

Y’all need to keep in mind that there is a lot of symbology in the book of revelation.

Can they be saved and not believe that trinity? I hope so, otherwise many are deceived .

Actual people. My guess, Enoch and Elijah as they never died their first death yet. They have been spared for the end.

Some say Moses, because he appeared with Jesus to some of the disciples in the transfiguration. Personally I tend to think it will also be Enoch and Elijah, for the reason that Mark Frost stated above. They are definitely real people though.

Something is not meant to be taken literally, when the text itself indicates that. Like for example the parables of Jesus, these may or may not be true stories.

The two people are symbolic of the church. however, throughout history people have widely believed that it was Enoch and Joshua, Enoch and Elijah, Elijah and Matthew, and so many others. There’s no reason to take these two witnesses to be literally being that the entire book is an apocalypse. And for those of you who don’t know, apocalypse is one of the most symbolic genres of writing found in human history. It is fair to say that most of the book can be taken symbolically.

They are actually people in most people consider them to be Elijah and Enoch. That is because those are the only two people that were taken up into heaven without having died first.

It never said Enoch was taken to heaven all it said is god took him and where did he take him? Secondly Jesus said no one can get to heaven without him

I’ve read compelling arguments saying it’s the church and Israel. But the bible says “it is appointed once for a man to die, then the judgement.” Enoch and Elijah never died. The were taken to heaven on a whirl wind. So my money is on them being those two
