Can anyone simplify the church timeline? I want to understand the split between Protestants and Catholics.

You simply have two groups that departed from adherence to the scripture by very slowly introducing false definitions, which gave rise to false doctrine. Neither one can claim that they follow the scripture alone.

Honestly, I don’t know if you can simplify it, you have to start with the Decian Persecution that occurred in 250 AD to begin to see some of the initial causes that would then evolve. The period of the Byzantine Popes, which occurred between 500 and 750 (give or take) would also be essential to this understanding. The Waldensians, John Wycliffe, and Jan Hus also play central into all of of this, and then you arrive at Luther and Wittenburg’s door in 1517. My point is that there was a thousand years plus of history, of cause and effect, etc, that would lead to the Western Split.

Gloria Gloria In Roman-Catholic theology, salvation is based on works instead of faith. This means you have to earn God’s grace in by participating in sacraments in order to become saved. This, however, is a direct contradiction to the New Testament. Even Jesus taught, that you have to be born again “in order to see the kingdom of God” and that such a rebirth is only possible from God (John 3:1-8/9). That means, as many more passages suggest, that God has to make “the first step” not man.
Further, Catholics worship Mary and other saints, which is idolatry, and expressively forbidden by the ten commandments.
The doctrine of the purgatory is nowhere to be found in the Bible as well.

The Emporer Constantine got fed up with the Christians who would not compromise with Emporer worship so he made Christianity a State Religion and relaxed the persecution – somewhat! Subsequently Bibles were burned and those who didn’t join had a bad time right up to Luther. ‘Table Talk,’ was a book of the conversations Luther and his friends had around the table. The penalty for owning it was dire. You can download it, it’s a bit long but in it Luther gives his opinion that the bread and wine in Communion is just that. Bread and Wine.

Gloria Gloria (If I remember correctly) The year 1517 was the time for the reformation. Even though there some reformers before Luther, he is the one who got everything started. According to Church history, there have been several hearings where German leaders would hear both the catholic and lutheran sides. From that we got the “Confessio Augustana” where lutheran theology is written as a statement to the state leaders.
Then, every Lord in old Germany could decide what theology his region should follow. Some chose Catholicism, some Lutheranism.
Many years later, the Ottoman Empire invaded some parts of Europe, especially Italy. Because of that, state leaders had to unite both catholic and lutheran regions to present a stronger front against the turks. This was the first time lutherans were accepted.

There is absolutely no historical evidence that the ancient “apostolic” church would later become the “RomanCatholic” religion. This sect would arise from the rule of 5th century A.D. Roman Emperor Constantine who saw a great political opportunity to keep Rome united by making it “christian”, declaring this Roman religion the official state church thus imposing a theocracy using a hybrid dictrine mixing Christian Ecclesiology (BiblicalDoctrine) w/pagan religious infusing, for example the cult of the worship of Mary. Constantine’s political maneuvers caused the break between the Roman church & the EasternOrthodox sect circa the 7th Century. The Roman church & it’s pope’s, many of them sadistically-corrupt basically had a theocratic grip on most European monarchies until the Reformation of the 1500s when a reforming priest named MartinLuther challenged the authority of the Roman church basing his premises on the Bible. His assertion that justification (salvation) is by grace through faith in Christ alone shattered the Roman church’s assertion that salvation must be throught it & its priests thus causing the RomanCatholic so callled “protestant Reformation which would serve as ONE of (along w/theclassical ideas ofRome/Greece &Enlightenment Ideas) the ideological basis for democratic governments in Northern Europe & No.America(US) the RomanCatholic countries remaining under the control of monarchical desposts controllled by the Vatican, the “headquarters” of the Roman Church!

The Protestant Reformation was a step-change from the continuing effort to cleanse the church from corruption. Perhaps, you could trace the beginning back to the 4th century outpouring of monasticism in response to secularization of the church after Constantine permitted the free practice of Christianity as the favored Roman religion. Centuries and many Martyr’s later, John Wycliffe – Morning Star of the Reformation – translated the Bible into the English language, much to the chagrin of the Pope, who condemned all non-Latin texts to the flame. But this 14th Century translation was smuggled into England and was the kindling of the Reformation 2 centuries later. Martin Luther was much exercised by the manner of Johann Tetzel’s sale of indulgences to support the completion of St. Peter’s basilica in Rome. Gloria Gloria When reading skills started becoming more prevalent, people started realizing that the church in Rome was not teaching what was in the Bible.
So, people had a mass exodus from the church the Protestant reformation to pursue biblical truth and teaching, and not the Pagan practices with a facade of Christianity which is today called the catholic church.

Catholic means universal. Where is took a wrong term is when is became The Roman Catholic church. Protestant means to protest the erroneous teachings that filtered in. Works dont save you as the Catholics professed (for people control) but you are saved by faith (that is in Jesus Christ)

To the OP: in the beginning there was only Catholics, around 1050 A.D. the Orthodox Churches split from the Catholic Church, around 1500 because of abuses in the Catholic Church Luther split from the Catholics . after that every Protestant split from every other Protestant. By the time of Luthers death there was already 500 different denominations.

The Jewish kingdom church started in Acts 2. The Body of Christ church started after Jesus sent Paul to be the apostle to the gentiles after Acts 9.
Both Catholicism and nearly all Protestantism are both perversions of the now non existent Jewish kingdom church which was dispersed when Israel stoned Stephen in Acts 8. And the age of that church was fully closed by God and Paul in Acts 28.
The only legitimate church existing now is the Body of Christ church taught by Paul in Romans through Philemon.
The false church are those trying to carry out the apostolic church under the 12 Apostles to Israel. That’s Roman Catholicism and All of it’s whore spawn in Protestantism.
The true commission Christ gave through Paul to His true Body (church) is in Ephesians 3:9-11. Anybody who does not recognize and teach according to the Fellowship of the Mystery is a false teacher and false church.

Catholics wanted to, and still hold on to, the unbiblical doctrine of works-based salvation. A Christian can’t support this false teaching.

Rome, which hated Christians, decided to pull the wool over Jesus’s sheep’s eyes and so they paganized Christian’s by making goddess worship with Mary, polytheism with praying to saints, even though Jesus is the only mediator between God and man; also, trinity doctrine that makes three gods instead monitheism… made Christian’s worship the Pope as “God’s Vicar” which means Pope is God incarnate…and the church murdered nonbelievers in the love and name of Christ while teaching many other heretical and satanic doctrines…then people became literate after the dark ages and were able to read bible by themselves and see through the lies of Satan’s Roman Catholic Church…bingo bango… Luther, reformation, protestant church…

You guys talking about Catholic but do not really understand that, Catholicism is just like the Protestant. Within the Catholic Church there are lots of factions, the Catholic in US is very different than in Italy or South America. IMHO the Catholic has lots of very good things that we can learn from, so, try to understand Catholic before we do bad mouthing on here. Or you can give solid evidences that area that in need of reform. We are guilty of what Jesus said in Matthew 5:22.

Martin Luther was a Catholic priest who at first spoke out against the true abuses of buying indulgences for the Holy Souls in purgatory. When told to stop, Luther became more outspoken and angered the hierarchy who excommunicated him. Luther took his followers with him and they were called Lutherans.

This sparked what is called the Protestant Reformation. Protesting the abuses and false teachings of Catholicism. Effort to REFORM the Catholic Church. When the Catholic Church excommunicated Luther, his follwers began tehir own church which eventually became known as Lutherans. Many other denominations have also sprung up at this time and later, wanting to follow the Bible and ignroe the many false doctrines and pracices and hierarchy of the Roman Catholic Church.

The RCC did not give the populace the opportunity to read the scriptures for themselves as a way to ensure they kept them under their false teachings.
A Roman Catholic priest started studying the scriptures for himself, and was convicted by God regarding the gross error in the RCC and he wrote a 99 point thesis which he nailed to the doors of a Cathedral. That is how the reformation started. -
There is about 280-years between the Church and the pagan cult of Catholicism. Catholicism has never been Christian. Catholicism was founded by Constantine in 312-313AD via the Edict of Milan by merging Babylonian Paganism/Roman Paganism with elements of Christian and non-Christian (Apocrypha) doctrine in order to make the pagan cult more palatable to the masses.

Let me suggest that it started with John Wycliffe in the mid to late 1300’s a Priest fired because he spoke out against some of the church doctrines as well as stated that the Bible was our authority and not the pope. He also believed everyone should have a Bible and in their language. Years after his death the drugged up his bones and burned them and scattered them in the river. Later Martin Luther came along and posted objections on the door that started the Reformation. That’s my short version but do a little research every interesting.
