Original term was “followers of the way” but the term Christian was used by a roman in Antioch to describe people the followed the Teachings of the Christ.

The core beliefs are love God and love your neighbor as yourself, Fear God and keep his commandments and trust Jesus Christ and his finished work on the cross of Calvary for the remission of sins

Acts 11:19-30 Believers in Jesus were first called Christians at the church at Antioch. The word means Christ like, followers of Christ are know as Christians. The name was at first a derogatory term, referring to the people of Christ. The believers there in Antioch of Syria constantly hearing the name of Christ, named these people Christians, because that would be tantamount to saying that these were the people of the Messiah. Christianity evidently means from or of Christ, Jesus! It is the attempt by people to establish a cult from Jesus Christ with the goal to have people live the way Jesus Christ wanted!
Christianity should actually be a cult guiding and motivating people to UNDERSTAND and live strictly according to the TEACHINGS of Jesus!
To be noted is that Christianity, as a religion is a Creation of human beings! Lord Jesus never in His Ministry desired to found a RELIGION; His only desire was to have people UNDERSTAND HIS Message of ENLIGHTENMENT AND SALVATION; a message that teaches man his purpose and vocation in the World, and LIVE ACCORDING TO IT; that is, turn the Message into earthly or physical accomplishment, much like some scientists are doing for a peaceful and happy World! However, Christianity as we have it today is a man made religion that represents the Mission and Message of Jesus different from what He wanted; for example, talk much but do very little, and paint the wrong picture of God that is only love but not JUSTICE, thereby cultivating evil! It also emphasises earthly accomplishment over spiritual enlightenment and accomplishment, therefore being very different from what Jesus Christ prescribed! -

The gospel pertains to man’s rightness with God. The gospel impacts the life of an individual by leading to spiritual conversions that change the life of the individual and align the spirit for the afterlife. The world view is judeo Christian moral values built into some cultures/nation states. They don’t necessarily reveal religious practices but identify moral code for society. It originates with its founder Jesus Christ. Jesus started the movement. In the 4th century the religious model took it from sectarian denominations to a religion. It modeled the bureaucratic structure used in Roman municipal government, influenced also by Hellenism and Greek philosophy. Rome fell, the church roots survived and rebuilt largely off the Benedictine order. All the while groups of separatists continued to grow across the word. This universal church eventually split into Roman Catholicism, Eastern, Russian, oriental, and Persian orthodox churches, and protestant denominations. There are also many denominations that don’t identify with the universal or protestant wings. Hope that helps. It’s how I would define the 2000 year span as shortly as possible.

God called us to follow The Way. Followers of the way were called Christians as insults, but it became a badge of honor. Christianity was just a term to call the group of Christians. If someone started the way today, it would sound like a dang Jim Jones death cult or something bad, a cult for sure. So, we should probably stick with Christianity.
